What are the advantages of multicoloured braids for sea fishing?

multicoloured braid

Multicoloured braids are one of the models that I really like. Different types of markings exist but the principle remains the same. Let's see together why I use them for vertical fishing but also when I fish bluefin tuna with lures.

The principle of multicoloured braids

More and more manufacturers are offering multicoloured braids. This marking is done in different ways:

  • Uniformly braided in a uniform colour with a white or black marking on about ten centimetres as can be seen on the YGK G SOUL models.
  • Change of braid colour every 10 meters with a different colour line every meter.

In all cases, the aim is to help the angler to find his place in the water layer.

A major fishing interest

Marking the braid allows you to know more precisely where you are in the water column.

Let's take the example of this braid, marked every meter by a yellow line and whose color changes every 10 meters.

When you let your line go down vertically, you just have to count the colors that scroll by. Each colour corresponds to 10 m. If you see white, green and red passing by, then you are about 30 metres down.

Let us recall that the technique known as the elevator technique, consisting in making the lure go up in a linear way in the water column is very effective and these braids are particularly adapted there.

The metre-by-metre marking allows you to estimate your ascent speed and adapt it to the conditions of the day. It will also give you a valuable indication of the current height of your lure.

Example: After making contact with the bottom, you go back up your line and count 5 yellow markings. This means that your lure has risen 5 meters. The major interest to know this is when you want to make contact with the bottom again. It is often in this case, especially in windy conditions or during a fast drift, that hooks occur and cause loss of material.

When lowering the decoy, check the decoy with the aid of the intermediate markings. When the 5 th passes in front of your eyes you know that you are close to the bottom and so you can anticipate the contact with it, a fortiori, limit the risk of hook.

Usefulness in tuna fishing

I appreciate this type of multicoloured braid when fighting big bluefin tuna. The markings give me a fairly accurate idea of how deep the fish is, even though it's often visible to the depth sounder when it's upright on the boat. I also know exactly how much braiding the fish is taking up during the rushes.

For vertical fishing as I practice it on deep enough areas off the coast of Brittany, I use the G SOUL super Jigman model from YGK in size PE 1.5. It is an excellent value for money and the reels, distributed in 200 m, offer sufficient capacity.
