1 species, 1 box, 10 lures : fishing for sea bass from the shore

Fishing for sea bass on uneven and slippery banks, often in waders, quickly becomes tiring and even painful if you are poorly equipped and overloaded. Thus, beyond the efficiency in fishing action, it is important to make a selection of lures limited but obviously relevant.

As you get to know your spots, catch fish and tame your lures, the boxes of lures tend to get considerably smaller.

For bass fishing, and even more so from the shore, my rule is now to have only a small box and that it can fit in the pocket of my waders. Moreover, all my accessories must fit in this small space because I make a rule not to take a backpack! Here is my selection of lures for sea bass fishing from the shore.

The fishing context

Sea bass fishing is not reserved for boat fishermen and fortunately because it would deprive 90% of the practitioners of the pleasure of this fish. On the contrary, from the edge it is quite possible to carry out sublime fishing and of très large fish, because the majority of the marine predators, and the sea bass even more, come to nourish in très few water and with some mètres even décimètres of the cÃ'teâeuros¦

For this type of fishing, I use a light set (5-20gr) and therefore a selection of lures in correspondence.

From the shore, we often fish in waders, it is necessary to leave as light as possible!

Constraints to be taken into account

when fishing for sea bass from the shore, the spots can be very varied in terms of cover (seaweed), depth, current intensity and casting distance. It can be an estuary, a beach or a rocky coast.

If at times you will have to fish the edges with great discretion and the obligation to pass through the cover, you will have to cast far and fish deeper in much more open areas.

Possible techniques and animations

In this context, all the existing techniques for fishing for predators can be used. Thus you can fish on the surface, on the fly, in traction, in linear to be scratched with soft lures obviously but also with swimming fish.

Une 10aine de leurres bien choisis suffisent pour couvrir l'ensemble des situations.
A dozen well-chosen lures are enough to cover all situations.

The variables

From the shore, I prefer lures of standard size for sea bass fishing, so around ten centimeters, but it is quite possible to fish smaller (in 3 inches for example).

In terms of colors, especially if the water is clear, I prefer natural and transparent tones for sunny days.

The important variable for soft lures will be the weight of the lead heads that you will have to vary according to the spots you fish. In estuary, often a range of 2 to 7g is particularly relevant, but on rocky coasts where you can meet deep areas (4-5m or more) at casting distance, you should then plan leaded heads of about twenty grams or more if there is wind.

The 10 selected lures

The Pulse shad from Yum is a lure that stirs up a lot of water and allows very slow animations. In estuary, it will be one of my favorites. If you are more interested in rocky shores, a shad with traction, like the Illex Nitro Shad (size 90 and with a 14 or 21g lead head for example), will be more suitable when you need to produce strong vibrations in a turbulent environment.

  • Sawamura One up shad 4 inches

The One Up by Sawamura is an excellent lure for all soft lure fishing techniques and unlike the previous one, it offers a more discreet and fine vibration. It will be an excellent complement. Mounted as a Texan for prospecting oyster beds or seaweed beds, it is a formidable weapon.

  • Sawamura One up shad 5 inches mounted in texan and weightless

When it comes to fishing on the surface in the middle of seaweed, there is only one solution which is buzzing fishing. In this case I prefer once again the One Up shad because it is very dense and allows you to cast far even when mounted in weightless. The use of the 5 inches model will make you gain a few extra grams.

Quelques leurres souples montés de manière différentes vous permettront de pêcher dans tous les milieux et profondeurs.

Because it has been a must-have for years, the Megabass X-layer must be part of your box. Mounted on a Texan to scrape water veins or algae stains or on a triangular shaped lead head to fish on the fly, its rattle will not leave indifferent the bass present in the area.

To complete this selection of soft lures, I always have in my box a rubber jig with a craw. On the edges, bass often eat crabs and there is nothing like this lure to present a perfect imitation of these preys.

  • Xorus Patchinko 100

Sea bass fishing cannot be considered without the emotions of surface fishing. The Xorus Patchinko 100 is an excellent stickbait to track them from the shore. It casts very far and its concave mouth produces small "pops" very perceptible when the water is slightly agitated. A must have!

  • Heddon Mini spook

The second stickbait which takes place in my box and to which I owe many big fishes in spite of its small size is the Mini Spook of Heddon. I particularly recommend the HOS color.

When it comes to offering a different sound on the surface and to explore large areas of water in powerfishing, there is nothing like a propeller lure brought back to the line at high speed. I have a particular weakness for the 3dr Prop from Yo-Zuri, nicknamed "the lawnmower" because of its characteristic noise.

Impossible to consider bass fishing without a swimmer fish. Animated in line in the open water or jerking near the lookouts when the bass refuse to come to the surface, it will allow you to unblock many situations. A sure value is the Vision 110 from Megabass which I rarely do without.

Finally, because sometimes a hunt explodes very far from the shore and no conventional lure allows you to reach them, you must necessarily have with you a 15 to 20g casting jig so you don't cry sitting on the bank watching the seagulls dive. I particularly like the Meiji from Explorer Tackle which has a rather wide profile and flies well on the descent.
