On October 18, 2020 will be held on the banks of the Seine in Paris, Fluctuat Nec Mergitur, the 1st Street Fishing organized by the Union of Fishermen of Paris and which displays objectives turned towards the aquatic environment. We contacted Charlie R., Secretary of the UPP, to know more about it.

Supporting the Parisian aquatic environment

Besides the fact that it is the first Street Fishing organized by the Union des Pêcheurs de Paris (AAPPMA of Paris intramuros having in management the Seine), it is the objectives pursued by this event which deserve a particular highlight.

Indeed, the participation of fishermen in the Open Street Fluctuat Nec Mergitur will be used to finance projects of the UPP concerning the Seine in Paris and in particular the installation of vegetated rafts to support fish spawning. " The Parisian Seine is very canalized, very concreted, which offers few areas of retreat to fish and little space for their reproduction. "says Charlie R., Secretary of the UPP.

This type of project has already been set up in partnership with the Paris City Council and under the impetus of other Parisian AAPPMAs that manage the Parisian canals. " The City of Paris has already granted the UPP a subsidy for this project of vegetated rafts on the Seine, but it is very expensive and the goal of Open Street is to contribute financially to the project. "adds Charlie R.

Conduct a fish inventory

For this event, the Union des Pêcheurs de Paris has joined forces with various fishing stakeholders, including Nervurax Fishing (YouTube channel popularizing scientific data on fish, fishing and the aquatic environment), Team River Clean (environmental association collecting waste on the banks of French rivers and lakes) and also Fish Friender, a mobile fishing application well known to anglers.

" The use of the Fish Friender application will have the double interest to allow, in the current sanitary context, that the catch forms are dematerialized and can be done remotely but also to be able to proceed to the census of the various species of fish caught during the competition. "says Charlie R.

The perch will of course remain the main species but the pike population has been increasing for a few years in the capital and the asp is starting to appear. A good opportunity to get an idea of the state of the populations of these species.

A committed challenge for the environment

In addition to these aspects turned towards the environment, Fluctuat Nec Mergitur remains a challenge of fishing for carnivorous fish with lures which will be carried out in binomial with final classification. Each angler will be given a welcome pack before the start of the competition and will have the day to survey the 30 km of banks of the course extending 200 m downstream from the National bridge to 200 m upstream from the Garigliano bridge. An excellent opportunity to get involved while practicing your passion. See you on October 18, 2020 at 7am at the foot of the Eiffel Tower!
