Know-how / The FG knot, the most famous of all connection knots

FG knot

If there's one knot every lure angler knows about, it's the FG knot. However, this knot is not easy to master and requires a certain amount of time to learn before it can be done correctly, quickly and under all conditions.

The FG knot, whose purpose is to connect braid to a fluorocarbon strand, is well known to lure anglers. It's very strong and goes extremely well through rings, but it's quite complicated and sometimes time-consuming to master.

Step 1

Wrap your braid around your thumb. You'll need to make several turns to prevent the coils from unravelling.

Step 2

Do the same around your index finger, pulling the braid as tight as possible.

Step 3

After securing your fluorocarbon spool (under your foot, for example) to keep it taut throughout the knot, pass it behind your braid (between your braid and your hand).

Step 4

With your fluoro, work your way around the braid towards your thumb.

Step 5

Perform the same operation, but this time towards your index finger.

Step 6

Repeat the same operation about twenty times on each side, taking care to keep your braid taut and to pull well on your fluoro strand after each turn. This will form a "sock" of braid around your fluoro.

Step 7

Continue the operation until your sock measures around 1.5-2 cm (or even more with large-diameter braids).

Step 8

Take your sock between your thumb and forefinger and you can then unwind the braid with your fingers.

Step 9

Hold the fluorocarbon strand and the main braid strand between your fingers above the sock.

Step 10

Make a first key with the free strand of braid around the fluorocarbon and the braid upstream of the sock to secure the knot.

To do this, simply loop the braid around the fluorocarbon, then loop it back through the resulting loop, and finally tighten firmly.

Step 11

Make a total of 3 keys in succession.

Step 12

Make a final finishing key, but this time pass your braid through the loop 5 times.

Step 13

Tighten tightly by pulling on the individual strands, then trim off any excess and your knot is now complete.

Finishing variant

There is another way to finish this knot, which is to make the three keys around the fluorocarbon and the braid as in the previous version. Then make 3 successive keys only around the braid, then a triple key (still around the braid) to finish.

Advantages :

  • Very fine knot that fits particularly well in the rings
  • Very solid
  • Effective with all diameters of fluorocarbon and braid

Disadvantages :

  • It takes a long time to learn
  • It is even more difficult to achieve with braids and thin fluorocarbons
  • It is not always easy to carry out in difficult conditions (swell, rain, wind, etc.)
