Know-how / How to create a touch indicator or float stop

For trout toc fishermen, but also for nymph fishermen, the use of a bite indicator is extremely useful to visualize simple line movements. This accessory is made from a single strand of fluorescent nylon or braid.

The use of a sliding knot on the main line is sometimes useful. In fact, while it may simply act as a stop in the case of a sliding float, there's another advantage in using a coloured thread.

Tackle anglers often use Rigolettos as bite indicators, but these can be effectively replaced by a simple piece of fluorescent line. For nymph anglers, this accessory is also very useful for visualizing line movements.

For greater visibility, I've made this tutorial with 40/100 fluorescent thread.

Here's how to do it:

Step 1

Place your fluorescent wire parallel to your line.

Step 2

Make two turns with your fluorescent thread around your line.

Step 3

Take the two ends to form a loop.

Step 4

Circle them on top of each other twice.

Step 5

Moisten the knot and tighten gradually.

Step 6

Finish tightening, taking care not to pinch your line. All that's left to do is cut off any excess and slide your touch indicator onto your line to place it where you want it.

Tips and tricks

  • For reasons of hold and if I have a very large diameter braid, I prefer to make this accessory with it. The knot is just as easy to make, and there's no risk of it coming undone.
  • To make a stop float for a sliding float, depending on its size, I advise you to make 2 or 3 in a row so that they slide more easily on your line.
  • You can leave excess wire longer for better visibility.

Benefits

  • Extremely quick and easy to use.
  • Can be made from any material.
