Fly tying for trout: a variation on the Tequila blob

In the tank, some flies are becoming famous for their efficiency. Their use has become almost unavoidable, especially in certain conditions. Such is the case with blobs, strange flies that are much appreciated by trout in lakes and reservoirs. Here's a video of a variation on a well-known model: the Tequila blob!

Blob fishing

The blobs are said to represent an agglomerate of daphnia, or perhaps an egg, but we don't really know what the trout think. In any case, their effectiveness has been proven.

A wide range of set-ups can be used for lake and reservoir fishing on different line densities.

Their trump card is their round/oval ball shape, which not only represents a variety of prey, but also pushes out of the water, creating vibrations that are picked up by trout from afar. Their colors are often bright, attracting fish.

They work especially well on freshly-introduced fish, but can also be used on more heavily stocked trout.

A variety of assemblies :

It is possible to mount a train of 2 or 3 blobs on a leader. This is often done with S3 intermediate sink lines. By spacing them 1.5 to 1.8 m apart, they "work" in different layers of water. A technique used in large reservoirs across the Channel, but also in smaller lakes.

A blob can also be combined with other flies, such as cormorants, diawl bach or chironoma larvae. Sometimes, these nymphs are also placed between two blobs on a three-fly rig (maximum number of flies authorized in France).

The blob can be taken by trout, but they often attract attention and then come to take the nymph.

Blobs can also be placed on a jig above two nymphs (or vice versa), or on a streamer for the same reasons. Attract attention and bring fish close to your leader to present them with smaller flies.

In washing line often used with a booby or FAB that floats to hold one or two nymphs at a height of water, the blob can replace these flies to slow the descent of nymphs and fish in several layers of water and find active fish.

Sometimes a blob can also be placed between two boobies on an S5 to S8 sink line, or below a booby with buoyant eyes to bring the blob up or keep it at a certain height above the bottom.

Assembly video on the Youtube channel Ardent Fly Fishing :

This video shows you how to tie this blob and its uses. These are very simple flies to assemble, which means you can quickly build up a nice collection to test the colors that work on the reservoirs where you usually go fishing.

You can change the colors as you wish and try out things that aren't necessarily available on the market. The advantage of tying your own flies is that you can compose with the colors you want and combine colors at will.

The marabou tail gives a little more life and can trigger fish that wouldn't necessarily have taken a blob without a tail. The tail is often mounted with flashabou or kristal flash.
