Black bass fishing: the need for spawning grounds

Install black bass spawning grounds © Laurent Duclos

Artificial spawning grounds for black bass are used to secure and increase natural reproduction, especially in bodies of water with few suitable or degraded spawning areas.

Interest in black bass spawning grounds

Black bass spawning grounds encourage natural reproduction and limit costly stocking, by allowing black bass to reproduce in situ.

They enable the production of local fry that are better adapted to climatic conditions and the water body than introduced fish.âeuros

Black bass spawning grounds also compensate for the lack of clean substrate (gravel, sand) or favorable littoral zones in highly mineralized or artificial ponds and gravel pits.

Finally, they also help improve recruitment (juvenile survival rate) by combining spawning grounds, refuge meadows and tranquil spawning areas.

On a fisheries scale, stabilize or develop a perennial population of black bass, making the fishing site more attractive.âeuros

Choice of location

Placement determines the effectiveness of the spawning bed.

Depth : ideally 30 to 80 cm, with some deeper spawning (up to 1âeuros2 m) if the water is very clear or the fish are disturbed.âeuros

Orientation: often north or northâeurosest shores if they are shallow, as they warm up well without being burnt by direct sunlight.âeuros

Sunshine : mid-shade/mid-sun zones; we're looking for good water warming (spawning starts around 15âeuros18 °C) without strong wind turbidity.

Protection : choose areas sheltered from prevailing winds to avoid clogging the eggs with resuspended sediment.âeuros

Spacing : about 4âeuros5 m between spawners to limit competition between males.âeuros

Quantities : order of magnitude of a dozen spawning grounds/ha in a pond with few natural spawning grounds, 5âeuros6/ha in simple complementation.âeuros

Practical set-up (pond or small body of water)

For a small private pond or gravel pit, installation is simple and inexpensive.

Place the crates in the areas identified in previous years as "nesting spots" (or presumably favorable), at the right depth and orientation.

Allow to stabilize, avoid trampling or disturbance during spawning.

Follow-up

In spring, observe whether males position themselves on the spawning grounds (nest defense, agitation over the gravel).

Note which spawning sites work best and adjust placement and number the following year.
