Tarn-et-Garonne: fishing in second category open all year round!

Year-round fishing

The Tarn-et-Garonne fishing federation has announced a major change for the department's anglers: fishing in the second category is now authorized all year round. This measure applies in particular to lure and live-bait fishing, with no specific closed season.

Meeting fishermen's expectations

This decision is part of a two-pronged approach: to ensure better protection of fish species, while at the same time meeting anglers' expectations. The national closure was initially introduced to protect pike, a species that is difficult to catch during its breeding season. Observations carried out in recent years, notably on the Balat-David lake, which has been open all year round for the past 3 years, have revealed no significant impact on the reproduction of this carnivore.

On the other hand, other species, more vulnerable during their reproduction, require special attention. Pike-perch and black-bass, known as "nest protectors", are particularly sensitive between April and June. To preserve these species, temporary reserves will be set up from January 26 to June 5, the locations of which are specified on page 6 of the fishing guide.

Rules to respect

The months of February and March promise a particularly favorable period for perch, pike-perch and black-bass fishing. Nevertheless, we remind you that water bodies classified as "trout charters" remain off-limits to lure fishing.

Finally, the mandatory catch-and-release rules apply as follows:

  • Pike: January 25 to April 25.
  • Black bass: January 25 to June 6.

These measures aim to reconcile passion for fishing with sustainable preservation of the Tarn-et-Garonne's fish heritage.
