An overview of recreational fishing
The aim of this national survey is to provide a comprehensive overview of recreational fishing in France, analyzing current fishing habits and consumption patterns.
The majority of respondents are regular and passionate anglers, as well as industry specialists.
The "Observatoire de la pêche 2025" survey, commissioned by Gifap, confirms that recreational fishing remains a stable practice, driven by highly committed, often regular and experienced anglers. It provides an overview of the profiles, habits and purchasing habits of French anglers, based on a large sample recruited via the industry's networks.

The results
The results reveal a marked ageing of the fishing community, and an insufficient renewal of the younger generation, which raises the question of the industry's medium-term viability. The economic context is clearly weighing on spending: anglers are making more arbitrary purchases, comparing prices and paying close attention to promotions and package deals.
Despite this pressure, specialist stores continue to play a central role, thanks in particular to their technical advice, choice of equipment and proximity to sales staff. Digital technology is making strong inroads as a source of information (websites, social networks, videos), influencing purchasing decisions and the preparation of outings, without however totally replacing physical retailers.

Key findings:
- Recreational fishing is holding up well, driven by highly committed anglers.
- The ageing of the fishing population and the low renewal rate remain major challenges.
- The economic context is weighing on spending, stimulating the search for attractive prices and promotions.
- Specialized stores continue to play a central role, thanks to the quality of their advice, while digital is asserting itself as an essential source of information.

All in all, the study provides industry players (brands, retailers, professional organizations) with invaluable indicators to help them adapt their offer, better target communications and work on the appeal of leisure fishing to new audiences.
