Why is squid spawn a good bait to use?
First and foremost, white squid has a c very strong hair. Holds well on the hook, withstands repeated casts, currents and attacks from small fish without breaking up too quickly.âeuros
Its odors and juices spread slowly, so in cold water, this gradual diffusion remains visible for a long time to marine carnivores.âeuros
Its natural appearanceâeuros¯is an asset. In fact, the pearly white color evokes a variety of prey (fish flakes, worms, small cuttlefish), which reassures wary fish.âeuros
Species targeted in winter with squid spawn
The squid spawn works just as well on board as on many species during the cold season.âeuros Among the most frequentâeuros¯:
- Sparidaeâeuros¯: sea bream, pageot, sars, which appreciate thin strips near the bottom.âeuros
- Rock fishesâeuros¯: wrasse, wrasse, small carnivorous cÃ'tiers.âeuros
- Opportunistic predatorsâeuros¯: bass or wolffish, pollack and whiting can seize it on more mobile or slow-drifting mounts.âeuros

Bait presentation
White squid can be presented in a variety of ways:
- Fine stripsâeuros¯: strips 0.5 to 1 cm wide, 4 to 8 cm long, pricked once or twice to maintain mobility at the end of the leader.âeuros
- For thicker plugsâeuros¯: to select larger fish or to resist a strong current, double the slat or wrap a small "reel" around the shank.âeuros
- In comboâeuros¯: squid + worm or squid + piece of fish add scent and volume to surfcasting or boat rigs.âeuros
Recommended winter mounts
For surfcasting, and more generally from the shore, fairly long fluorocarbon lines (80 âeuros120 cm) fitted with fine iron hooks in sizes 2 to 1/0 depending on the size of the slats are ideal for presenting the bait well.âeuros
For boat fishing, the leader will be made of multi-stackers above a terminal sinker, to present the squid strips just lifted from the bottom.âeuros
This bait can also be used for slow drifting. For example, in boats, a sliding or semi-sliding rig allows the squid to move naturally in the layer of water frequented by fish.âeuros

Little extras for better results
- Freshness of the appâeuros¯: a fresh or properly frozen/defrosted squid retains its shape and attractiveness much better.âeuros
- Areas to be prospected âeuros¯: in winter, it is better to insist for a long time on breaks, rock heads, edges of channels where fish are concentrated.âeuros
- Key timesâeuros¯: the best times are often when the light changes (dawn, dusk) and when the tides are high.âeuros
