Squid casting, an accessible and fun way to fish

Squid casting

Squid casting, also known as eging, is a dynamic and effective seaside technique that is attracting more and more enthusiasts.âeuros

Principle and period

Squid fishing involves casting a specific lure, called a jig, which imitates a shrimp or a small fish, then moving it in various ways to attract the squid. This type of fishing is best done in autumn and winter, mainly at sunset and at night, when squid come close to the shore.âeuros

Recommended equipment

A light, sensitive rod, from 2.4 to 2.7 m, eging or spinning, preferably with a soft action to minimize stalls, is all you need to get started. It will be accompanied by a reel in size 2500 to 3000, fitted with a fairly soft drag.

The line body, in fine braid (8 to 12/100), is finished with a fluorocarbon leader (preferably 20 to 26/100).

Different jigs can be used depending on the time and activity of the squid: sizes 2.0 to 3.5, leaded or unleaded models, phosphorescent or UV colors at night.âeurosâeuros

Animation techniques

There are two main types of jigging techniques for squid:

The slow linear technique : let the jig sink to the bottom, then bring it back in slowly, pausing for a moment, and remain vigilant for the slightest resistance, the sign of an attack.âeuros

Active animation techniques (Bichi bachi) : combine sharp jerks (jerk, wrist and upstroke) then pauses, which triggers the squid's aggressiveness, especially at the start of the session. Large jig models are useful for offshore prospecting.âeuros

A few essential tips

  • Water layer prospecting: use all heights of the water column to locate shoals.
  • Keep the line taut: squid are easy to unhook, so never give them any slack when reeling them in.âeuros
  • Favoring lighted posts (quays, harbors, dikes) and using lamps or starlites at night to attract squid.
  • Wipe the lure regularly to remove ink residues: a clean lure is more effective.âeuros
  • Use a fishnet to remove squid, especially from quays or high dikes.âeuros
