Shore fishing: catching different species

Support fishing from the shore © Laurent Duclos

Shore fishing is an accessible and popular method of presenting natural baits at the bottom of the water, usually vertically from rocks, dykes, jetties or docks.âeuros

Principle of the support fishing technique

The angler uses a rod, often 2.4 m to 5 m long, with a simple rig: a terminal sinker to hold the bait to the bottom and one or more hooks fixed to stacks along the leader. You fish with the line taut, waiting for a hit. This vertical approach, also known as plumb fishing, requires very little equipment. The most common rigs are pater-noster and multi-hook lines.âeuros

Zones and fund types

Support fishing can be practised all year round, on various structures:

  • Rocky coasts.
  • The dikes.
  • The docks.
  • The piers.

The best spots are often rocky or mixed-bottom areas, where rockfish, sparids and other species are concentrated.âeuros

Target species

The diversity of fish caught depends on the bottom:

On the rocks: girelles, serrans, crénilabres, rascasses, daurades, sars, bogues, oblades.âeuros

On sand or mud: bogue, paddlefish, bream, flatfish, even whitefish (watch out for the bite!).âeuros

Depending on the region, there are also bars, conventions, mackerels, places, and various surprises.âeuros

Recommended baits

The choice of bait depends on the target species:

  • Marine worms (chickweed, escavens, gravelworms).
  • Shrimps, prawns.
  • Shellfish (mussels, razor clams).
  • Chunks of oily fish.
  • Cuttlefish or squid lanières.âeuros

The bait must be securely fastened and, for some, lightly tied to resist touch and current.âeuros

Equipment to choose

You'll need a rod of suitable power (90 to 120 g) and a length of between 2.4 and 5 metres, depending on the position.

A medium-weight front-brake reel with 300 m of line from 35 to 45/100 completes the package.

Multiple hook or "machine gun" mounts will allow you to target schools of small fish or different species.âeuros

A few practical tips

  • Vary locations to find active fish.
  • Adapt lead to depth and current.
  • Alternate between vertical and back-and-forth movements to animate the bait and provoke the attack.âeuros

Fishing from the shore offers a wide variety of catches and can be easily adapted to different environments and conditions, while remaining fun and user-friendly.âeuros
