Fishing with cheese for different fish, efficient and economical

Fishing with cheese as bait is effective and easy. Cheese is not a natural food for fish, but its strong odour and fat content attract some fish, notably cyprinids in freshwater or even sparids at sea.

Which cheeses go with which fish?

For cheese fishing, we often use soft or spreadable cheeses such as Babybel, Vache qui Rit or Apéricube, or more fragrant cheeses like blue cheese, combined with flour to form a paste that holds well on the hook.

Cheese is often fixed on a small system called a "hair" (a small wire under the hook on which a spring or cage is placed to hold the paste) or directly in a cube on a treble hook. Various fish, such as trout, barbel, tench, carp and chub, can be caught with cheese in freshwater.

At sea, some people also use cheese such as Gruyère, Gouda or Emmental to catch fish like sars, bream or rock fish.

Using a cheese-based paste

To obtain a cheese paste that holds well on the hook, you need to mix the cheese with other ingredients to give it cohesion and elasticity, and prevent it from disintegrating too quickly in the water.

Simple and effective recipe

  • 125âeuros¯g soft cheese (Vache qui Rit, bleu, camembert or cheddar)
  • 2 slices lightly moistened sandwich bread
  • 3 teaspoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable or sardine oil (for fragrance and cohesion)

Thoroughly mix all the ingredients together until the dough is homogeneous, soft and sticky. Adjust the amount of flour according to the desired consistency: it should be firm enough to form a ball and hold well on the dough hook (the âeuros¯ressortâeuros¯).

Dressing tips

  • Add a little potato flake or wheat flour for extra elasticity.
  • Knead the dough for a long time.
  • Store the dough in cling film to prevent it from drying out before the fishing trip.
  • If the paste dries out, simply moisten lightly with a little water on the spot.

Hook attachment

Form a small ball and place it around the hook or a special spring.

Match ball size to hook size and species.

For greater effectiveness, use the "âeuros¯cheveuâeuros¯" technique or a small cage, which holds the paste better during throws and prolongs the duration of attractiveness.

If you follow these tips, the cheese paste will stay on the hook for a long time, even after several casts.
