A great playground for sea and shore fishing
La Rochelle is renowned for its sea fishing: a wide range of techniques can be used to find a large number of fish species. Bass, meagre, pollack, sea bream and bluefin tuna (the latter under strict regulations) are common species that can be caught either from the shore or from a boat.
Lure, jig or troll fishing is available day and night, depending on the season and tide. Famous spots include the new south jetty, the Môle d'Escale at La Pallice, as well as the nearby islands (Ile de Ré, Ile d'Aix, Ile d'Oléron), which are also ideal for shore fishing.
In addition, many professionals organize outings targeting the species present in the area.

Fishing on foot
The Rochelais coastline is ideal for fishing on foot, harvesting seafood, shellfish and crustaceans: mussels, clams, shells, crabs, shrimp and much more can be found in abundance on the beaches and surrounding rocks. Famous spots include Châtelaillon-Plage, Nieul-sur-Mer, Aytré, the Pointe du Chay in Angoulins or the northern beach of Rivedoux on the Ile de Ré.
Freshwater fishing too
Fishing near La Rochelle also means freshwater fishing. The canal from Marans to La Rochelle is very popular for freshwater fishing, with a wide variety of fish: black bass, pike, perch, eels and roach are all present. It's a great way to get away from salt water for a while and practice your passion.
Fishing is open to all, with several well-known routes (such as the Andilly locks and the La Moulinette canal), provided of course that you have a fishing licence and comply with current regulations (carnivorous fish are open from May 1st to the last Sunday in January).
It is also advisable to find out about local restrictions and to practice environmentally-friendly fishing.

La Rochelle is an ideal destination for recreational fishing, whether at sea, on the foreshore or in freshwater. It's a great place to have fun, thanks to the biodiversity and richness of its sites, while respecting local legislation and best practices.
