The best baits for barbel fishing come from their omnivorous and very greedy diet, combining animal baits, vegetable baits and some elaborate bait bonuses. Let's find out which baits to choose to target barbel.

Classic natural baits

Maggotsâeuros¯ can be used as a bouquet on the hook or as a bait on the feeder, they are very attractive and adaptable to all conditions.

Earthworms (compost, earthworms, cut or whole) are still the bait of choice for targeting large fish, especially in cold or colored waters.

Seasonal fruits (strawberry, cherry)âeuros¯ are surprising but effective baits during the season, and should be tried out especially in rivers lined with fruit trees.

Rich, meaty baits

Cheeseâeuros¯such as cubes of gruyère, parmesan or Babybel eschés are irresistible baits in some lively streams.

Smoked sausage and pâté can also be used. These are greasy, fragrant baits that, when cut into sections, act as both bait and groundbait. These baits can be extremely effective in rivers.

Frolicâeuros¯ type dog kibbles are very popular, as they sit well on the bottom and release aromatics and oils that are attractive to barbels.

More modern baits

Pellets (halibut, krill...)âeuros¯: 6 to 12âeuros¯mm pellets, rich in fishmeal/oil, keep the fish on the hook and help select the best fish. Ideal for feeder or match fishing.

Bouillettesâeuros¯: small boilies (8-12âeuros¯mm), meat aromatics, squid or crab, they select fish over 2âeuros¯kg and avoid small fry.

Live bait and imitations (lures/flies)

Insect larvae, gammarids, crayfishâeuros¯ are highly prized by the barbel that scours the bottom. Crayfish-imitation soft lures, heavy nymphs and small crankbaits are also formidable for active fishing.

Additional advice

Vary your presentationsâeuros¯: alternate between several baits during the same session.

Use scented, compact or resistant baits to select large subjects and limit undesirable ones.

Renew your bait regularly, especially fragile baits such as cheese or sausage, and adapt the size to the size of barbel you're after.
