Spring chub bait fishing is based on a simple idea: take advantage of a fish that is becoming active again, leaving areas that are too deep and moving around on edges, riffles, inlets and open spots. At this time of year, chub are keen to seek out natural foods, which makes classic baits very effective, provided they are presented discreetly and at the right tempo.

A spring fish

The chub is a wary cyprinid, but also curious and opportunistic. In spring, they often move in small groups, using current veins and transition zones between calm and lively water, especially when temperatures rise. This is a fish that observes for a long time before moving in, hence the importance of a slow, silent and precise approach.

Baits that work

The most regular natural baits in spring are earthworms, maggots and larvae, with fresh bread also making a difference on fish used to surface or edge foods. When fishing with toc or cork, earthworms remain a safe bet, especially in slightly tinted water or moderate currents. In certain sectors, small pieces of meat bait or more original baits can also work, as chub are omnivorous.

The right presentation

The key is not only the bait, but its drift. You often need to cast slightly upstream, letting the bait drift naturally towards the fish, and avoiding any sudden movement that would break the illusion of the prey being carried away by the current. On clear spots, polarized glasses can be used to spot fish and adjust the drift. In rivers, a simple toc rig or a discreet plug often gives better results than an overly heavy rig.

The best positions

In spring, look for chub near recovery pits, shaded edges, drowned trees, bridge piers, grass beds and fallen foliage. Fish often settle where the current naturally brings food. The calmer and clearer the spot, the more you need to reduce the size of the bait and take care with the line's entry into the water.

Spring chub fishing requires you to read the water, anticipate the drift and respect the behaviour of a fish that feeds on the lookout, never rushing. It's a fine fishery, often spectacular when the fish sucks in the bait on sight, but above all one that rewards discretion and patience.
