The chub, a fish to be caught all year round in a variety of ways

Chub fishing

Chub fishing is possible all year round in France, and even in Europe. The chub is an omnivorous fish, combative and wary, which responds well to a variety of techniques depending on the season, conditions and different spots.

Spring and summer

Surface lure fishing: when chub are active and hunting on the surface, use stickbaits, small poppers, artificial insects or soft lures. Very effective for sight fishing and in calm or shallow areas.

Fishing with natural baits using cork or toc: earthworms, moths, small insects caught on the spot (ants, grasshoppers), blackberries, cherries, berries on the surface can all be used. Natural drifting under trees and shady borders is very productive, especially in summer.

Fly-fishing with beetle, ant and grasshopper imitations. A fun way to fish in the dry as soon as the fish are hunting on the surface.

In autumn

Fish with soft lures and swimming fish. Go deeper, aim for more pronounced current zones and fish close to obstacles with slow animation. Spinner or wobbling spoons are still very effective on chub.

Natural baits such as worms, maggots (beware of regulations on certain rivers), hemp seed, bread dough or simple sweetcorn kernels can give very good results at this time of year.

In winter

Give preference to natural baits, whether you're using a sinker or feeder. Maggots (second category only), earthworms and even bread pellets are all good baits. Target eddies, deep banks, branches or other obstacles. In winter, chub activity slows down, so use discreet rigs and fish slowly.

A slow animation lure is best used in winter. Use small lead heads and shads or finesse to fish pits and sheltered areas, where chub congregate at this time of year.

A few additional tips for fishing for chub

Chub are wary, so approach gently and cast precisely to present the bait in front of the fish's mouth, especially in low, clear water.

Stay mobile, insisting only on places where fish are active or clearly visible, especially in summer when sight or surface fishing gives the best results.

Prefer fine lines (16-20/100 on leaders), small hooks, flexible or sliding set-ups that ensure natural presentation and greater discretion.
