Return of session / Fishing for meagre: an exceptional and memorable catch!

A nice skinny one! © Martial Montembault

Fishing is always full of surprises. The proof is in the exceptional catch of a meagre by Martial Montembault off the island of Houat. A personal record for a species that is uncommon in this area.

Meagre fishing

Recreational fishing for meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is very popular on France's Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, due to the power and size of this fish, which can exceed 30 kg.

The meagre frequents pools, current zones, estuaries, wrecks and rocky drop-offs, often from depths of 7-8 meters, up to over 50 meters. Activity is generally heightened during current changes around high and low tides.

Several techniques

Soft lures (shad type)Â for vertical fishingâeuros¯: 12-17 cm lures fixed on lead heads adapted to drift and depth (sabot, ball, olive shapes...). You need to fish very close to the bottom, and the animation consists in taking off and letting the lure drop carefully, as most of the bites occur on the way down.

Live or dead fishingâeuros¯: we recommend the use of long, strong drags, especially when fishing at a distance from the shore (e.g. Urfe long rigs). The use of long, strong drags is recommended, especially when fishing at a distance from the shore (long Urfe rigs, for example).

Fishing with "madshad" or jigâeuros¯: this is an effective way of quickly exploring different levels by boat, often coupled with the use of a depth sounder to locate shoals.

A personal best

Let Martial Montembault tell us how this memorable capture unfolded:

"I managed to catch this fine specimen of meagre by scraping the bottom on a drift off Houat that I do from time to time. A drift with animations using a long pull and letting the lure come down gently. I let the lure scrape the bottom by releasing the thread, because at the time, it was windy. I was weighted in 30 grams with a soft Nitro shad 150 lure and my rod, the original Statement 727, bent like never before with a brake that started to sing. I couldn't do anything for the first few moments, and then he finally decided to go up, but step by step, because as soon as I took 2 meters, he took 1 back. It was a fight with a brutal and powerful touch. Right up to the moment when we finally caught sight of his silhouette rising from the bottom, my friends and I were in ultimate concentration to finally see him.

I was very surprised to see it break through the water, because in my sector, it's the first time I've caught a skinny fish, especially a 1-meter one. Once it was in the landing net, the whole team on the Tiger Marine 6.50 open was delighted and congratulated themselves on this magnificent fish, which is my personal record."
