Bait for freshwater fishing: dendro or zebra worms

Fishing with worms

Dendro worms, also known as zebra worms or dendrobaena worms, are commonly used as fishing bait because of their effectiveness and ease of use. These worms have a long shelf life and hold up well in fishing action.

The dendro

The dendro or Dendrobaena Veneta is a pinkish worm with stripes, measuring between 5 and 10 cm in length.

It weighs in at around 1.7 grams, making it a substantial bait for a variety of fishing styles. Its texture and size allow many casts without deteriorating rapidly, which is particularly useful for toc fishing.

The worms are available in several sizes: micro, baby, medium and large dendros, allowing anglers to choose the size best suited to their needs.

Advantages of dendro or zebra worms

These worms are effective at catching a variety of fish, including whitefish such as roach and bream, and are particularly popular with trout. They are easy to store and handle, making them a practical choice for anglers of all levels.

Dendro worms are generally available from most tackle stores and can easily be bred at home.

Fishing applications

Dendrobaena Veneta is ideal for spearfishing, attracting a variety of white fish such as roach.

For feeder fishing, large worms can be mixed with groundbait to attract white fish such as bream or carp.

Used as a bait, Dendrobaena Veneta is also perfect for toc fishing for trout, thanks to its texture and size which allow many repeated casts.

Thread the worm onto the hook, taking care not to pierce it completely. This will keep the worm alive and active, attracting more fish.

Worm packaging and storage

Place your worms in a micro-perforated plastic box. The perforations allow good aeration, essential for worm survival.

Store the can in a cool place, such as a cellar or the bottom of the fridge. A cool temperature helps slow down the worms' metabolism, extending their lifespan.

You can use a special protein food to feed your worms. Sprinkle this food twice a week and add a little water to keep them slightly moist. This ensures that the worms stay lively and healthy.

For long-term storage (several months), replace worm bedding once a month. Use a substrate based on blond and black peat or coconut fiber. This provides a clean, favorable environment for their development.

Make sure the can is well ventilated to avoid the build-up of excessive moisture, which could encourage mold growth. Check the condition of your worms regularly to ensure that they are in good health and that storage conditions are optimal.

You'll be able to keep your worms healthy and ready for extended fishing trips.
