How does clonk work?
A clonk consists of three parts: the handle, the base and the head. By striking the surface of the water with a precise movement, the tool creates a sound echo. This acoustic wave reproduces vibrations similar to those of distressed prey or natural phenomena, stimulating the catfish's hunting instinct.
A method adapted to all contexts
One of the main advantages of the clonk is its versatility. It can be used on calm waters as well as in rivers with moderate currents. However, its effectiveness depends on several factors, such as water depth, the presence of catfish and your mastery of the technique. As I often tell my customers, the clonk is not Harry Potter's magic wand. Catfish are sometimes "educated" to this sound: the slightest tap on the surface can be enough to scare off a big fish.
Adaptation is the key
Start your sessions without clonk. Observe the reactions of the fish using the depth sounder. If they're not very active, then clonk: first give 2 or 3 clean shots and see if any catfish show up. I've been known to give a dozen or so shots in a row, which can be very useful in getting them riled up and triggering attacks!
Mastering the gesture
Using a clonk requires a certain dexterity. It's not just a matter of hitting the water at random. The movement must be fluid and controlled, alternating between strength and finesse. Practice is essential to achieve a steady, effective sound. An unsuccessful clonk will result in a mere splash on the surface and, quite often, a seasoned angler will say: "It's dead." The catfish will have realized that something is wrong and will start to panic. But don't panic: even the biggest fish will miss a clonk! Training and discipline are the watchwords of this technique.
Respecting fish and the environment
Although this method is formidably effective, it must be used ethically. Catching a catfish should never be done at the expense of its health or its natural environment. Handle it with care and release it quickly if you opt for no-kill fishing.
