Return of session / Fly fishing at the coup du midi, trout very active

A great session while discovering a new spot. © Enjoy Fishing / Jean-Baptiste Vidal

In the guiding season, I have very little fishing time. It's a seasonal job and you have to work as hard as you can. My client for the day wanted to have lunch with his wife, so I took the opportunity to do a little prospecting during the lunch break. The trout were there to my great delight!

It's important to find new spots when you're a fishing instructor-guide, not only to change your playing field, but also to offer new options for guiding and to allow you to rotate your fishing spots even more.

It's also a fun part of our job. Going fishing to discover new areas, testing equipment, taking photos for articles and social networks, etc...

Discovering new spots is always exhilarating, especially when the fish are there.

Beautiful sunshine finally warms the waters!

Our summer in Brittany has been rather shy, with few sunny days. The trout can live with this, but they don't mind a little sunshine to raise the water temperature and increase their metabolism.

The weather is therefore quite fine and I decide once again to use terrestrial imitations, in season, to seduce the trout on the ends of flats and edges. At this time of year, hatches are rare and the trout have to find other sources of food. I much prefer dry fishing to nymph fishing with wire, even though a small tandem nymph can often make all the difference.

I head upstream from the access I've found on a small road in the Breton countryside. I observe and notice that once again many trees are in the way on this route. Storm Ciaran has really taken its toll on Brittany, and the local AAPPMAs have a huge amount of work to do to make the courses accessible and remove the logjams. The river is very beautiful and it's always a pleasure to survey a new corner. It's almost like discovering a new river. In Brittany, I'm lucky enough to have a very large fishing territory, and I'm far from having been everywhere, there are so many possibilities!

Technical fishing on Brittany's waterways

In Finistère, the vast majority of rivers are no more than 8-10 m wide. What's more, they're often quite crowded and therefore technical to fish. Specific equipment is required. A short rod between 6.6 and 7.6, or even 8.6 for the bigger ones, fitted with a WF line that loads quickly. I've opted for the SAGE Dart in 7.6 line size 4. I use a Rio Creek line in 3 (one size smaller), which is a great line for short-range casting in small rivers.

Short rods such as the SAGE dart are preferable for small rivers.

For the experienced angler, fishing is possible just about everywhere, but you need to master rolled, backhanded and horizontal casts to slip through the branches. In Brittany, you need to be a complete angler to fish our small rivers. It's quite technical and I realize this every day with my customers.

So I'm looking for courses for all levels, from beginners to experienced or expert anglers. There's no shortage of complicated courses. But there aren't too many open stretches.

The first part of the spot is quite interesting and there are some nice openings for casting. I put one of my little size 14 beetles on a 12° point and the first very pretty 30 cm trout quickly intercepted it gently at the end of the flat. With the water levels, but also and above all the temperatures we've had since the opening, our wild trout have gorged themselves well and are in great shape. Even a fish of this size gives you a hard time. Jumping, fishing, trying to stall in the weed beds. They know how to do it!

A good start to the session. Then another, slightly more modest trout posted on an edge quickly came to suck up my fly. Great. It's a pleasure, because the fishing is very unpredictable this year, and the days follow one another and don't resemble one another at all! The sunshine has brought them out and it's nice to have some activity.

Active trout in the current

After catching a few fish in the dry, I set up a small nymph under a large terrestrial (stimulator) to fish a pool head where the currents are livelier and the position deeper. Several trout, including a very nice 31 cm one, will do me the pleasure of blocking the drift of my dry fly (which also acts as an indicator).

The bites are dry and the fish stay on the bottom in the current. They're so powerful, you feel like you're getting a really big one every time. A real treat!

I'll follow up with a few dry trout and then some nymph trout on a dark black model with a golden bead.

It's already time to get back to work to help my client perfect his casting and fishing skills.

A successful little break on a new course that I'll be going back to get to know better before taking customers there.
