The rod for traction fishing
For reasons of efficiency, pike fishing is almost exclusively done with casting rods. That's why it's important to choose a rod that fulfils several of the functions required for success. Firstly, your rod should be long, ideally from 2m10 to 2m40. The aim is to cast far to cover as much ground as possible and compensate for the average casting distances, which are lower with casting.
Secondly, a long rod simply enables you to perform longer pulls, but also longer downstrokes, where the bite often occurs. Finally, a long rod makes it easier to hook fish, thanks to its greater leverage. This is also an advantage when bites occur at the very beginning of the descent or at the end of the pull. In terms of power, consider that a rod of 14-42 grams or even 28-84 grams is more than sufficient for most lures.

The right reel
Choosing a reel for pull-pike fishing is much simpler than choosing a rod. Our main requirement is that it should be of sufficiently high quality to achieve long casting distances without making wigs. We can also take a look at the ratio we're going to choose, which should be high enough to recover slack quickly if a touch occurs at the end of the pull.
The ideal size is probably 200, both light enough to fish for several hours and strong enough to cast lures weighing over 50 grams. Capacity is of little importance, as it is very rare to take out more than 50 meters of braid during a cast or a fight. However, make sure that the drag is of good quality, as hooks must be strong and a drag that is too loose will cause you to lose a lot of fish.

Bodies and leaders for pulling pike
The line used for pull-pole fishing is quite unique compared to other techniques targeting pike. The aim is to limit the banner effect in the line as much as possible, so a sufficiently fine braid should be used. The mistake would be to use a braid that's too thick in the belief that you'll have a better chance of getting the fish out, as the number of bites would suffer too much. A 16 to 24 hundredths braid, depending on the weight of your lures, will be more than strong enough for this technique.
As for the leader, it's important to have a relatively long fluorocarbon, at least 2 meters, in 35 or 40 hundredths before our anti-cutting leader. Discretion is quite important for this technique where the braid can easily go over the fish's head. Finally, finish your leader with a 70 or 80 hundredth fluorocarbon to prevent a greedy fish from cutting you.
