Winter is the ideal season for squid and cuttlefish fishing. These two cephalopods come closer to the coast at this time of year. This fishing activity is accessible to all, from beginners to the most experienced among us.

Cuttlefish fishing

Cuttlefish are medium-sized cephalopods, generally between 20 and 30 cm long. It is easily recognized by its oval body and its eight tentacles housed between two large eyes and two large tentacles. It is a voracious predator, feeding on fish, crustaceans and mollusks.

Cuttlefish fishing is done with one or more jigs. This artificial lure generally imitates a large shrimp, which the cephalopod is fond of. You'll find jigs in very natural colors, but also, and often, fluorescent (or even phosphorescent) colors. Choose the latter, especially at night. They give excellent results.

Technique couldn't be simpler. Just let the jig sink to the bottom. That's where the cuttlefish usually hang out. You then animate the jig with jerky, more or less ample pulls. Your jig will quickly be snapped up. Choose an eging rod. Its suppleness will cushion the touch and avoid tearing the cephalopod's fragile skin.

The squid is also a cephalopod, but longer than the cuttlefish. It generally measures between 30 and 50 cm in length, and sometimes much more. It can be recognized by its elongated body, eight tentacles and two arms, which it uses to grasp its prey. It is also a voracious predator, hunting between two waters and being opportunistic when it comes to its menu.

As for cuttlefish, we'll be using jigs for this fishery, but this time they'll be floating and set up as machine guns. The line will be weighted at the end with a sinker in proportion to the bottom and current. This set-up, known as tataki it's not long before the "squid" come to life with broad, vertical scything strokes.
