What equipment is needed for a shallow pike rig?

Ready-to-use shallow rigs are available. However, making your own is very easy, and allows you to get exactly what you want, in relation to the lure on which it's mounted. Here's the equipment we need.

Head screw

The main feature of the shallow rig is the screw head. It is characterized by the presence of a screw in place of a hook, and a ring placed underneath to attach the armature. Two versions are available: those with a fixed sinker, and those with an adjustable sinker. The choice of one or the other is more a matter of taste, even if a head with interchangeable sinker seems more interesting and versatile.

Hook

For pike, treble hooks in sizes 1/0 and 2/0 cover all lure sizes and are ideal for this species.

Broken rings

60- or 80-pound broken rings provide ample room for the hooks and rolling swivel needed for the rig.

Rolling swivel

You need fairly large rolling swivels, size 4 or 6. It's agreed that you don't need 200-pound rolling swivels to fish pike, but you do need ones big enough to be proportionate to the broken rings and hooks of the rig. That way, you're sure to have freedom in the rig. It's not the strength that counts, but the size.

Pine

Pins are used to attach hooks to lures. Here, there are several types and sizes. There are smooth ones and ones with a micro-barb, which are best reserved for lures made with dense plastic, as they slip on lures that are too soft.

For lures with soft plastic, models with hooks hold better, but tear off more material and damage the lure.

Steel cable

You need steel with a strength of 30 or 40 pounds, in 49 strands. 49-strand steel gives the rig flexibility and, above all, has less memory than 7- or 19-strand steel. Since this is the part of the rig that comes into contact with the pike's teeth, it's essential to use this model to increase its lifespan. Another alternative is to use titanium.

Sleeve

Sleeves are used to create loops in the wire rope. For a 40-pound wire rope, which is 0.5 millimeters in diameter, I use size 0.7 sleeves.

Sleeve clamp

Sleeve crimping pliers, as the name suggests, are used to crimp sleeves.

Broken ring pliers

The broken ring pliers are used to open the rings.

Cutting pliers

Finally, cutting pliers are used to cut off excess steel wire.

Once you've got all this material together, you can move on to making your own shallow mounts.
