Special Edition / Pike fishing with glide bait, a particular and effective lure

Pike fishing with glide baits is extremely effective when you know how to adapt to the conditions encountered. When temperatures are low and fish are difficult, the glide bait is a type of lure to have in its box to trigger hits.

What is a glide bait?

The glide bait is a hard lure, of the swimbait family. Swimbaits are lures made of several interconnected parts, called joints. The distinction between a swimbait and a glide bait is seen in the number of joints in the lure. Glide baits often have only one joint in the middle and are therefore two-part, while classic swimbaits have at least three parts.

The two joints of a glide bait give it its particular S-shaped swimming action that annoys predators, especially pike. When the back end of the lure goes against the water, it acts as a drift that pushes the lure to one side. Once it changes sides, the lure also changes direction and so on until it reaches the shore. The glide bait's swimming action is called "snaking" by English speakers.

The reasons for the effectiveness of the glide bait

The glide bait's unique swimming action, which no other type of lure has, is a real weapon when it comes to tackling tricky fish. If you've ever watched pike swim, you'll have noticed that its swimming action resembles the undulation of a snake. The sudden changes of direction when the glide bait is swimming is a trigger for sudden attacks by pike, who think they see their prey escaping.

The undulation of the lure combined with sudden changes of direction imitates perfectly a wounded or fleeing fish. It can also be interesting to combine this swim with imitative colors, whether brown and green to resemble a pike or a perch, or white and gray to imitate a white fish. Glide bait fishing remains a slow fishing, so the choice of color is important to obtain concrete results.

Developed in 4 colors, this is a weapon of choice for pike fishing, especially at the beginning of the season and in the fall. Unlike most of the lures of this type, this glide bait is a noisy and sinking lure. The choice is made here, and the sound that the Statam gives off allows the fish to rise in the water.

It will find its place perfectly to fish in depths from 1 to 5 meters, in particular at the beginning of the season when the sound signal released by the lure makes up for the lack of visibility.

Under what conditions should the glide bait be used?

The glide bait is a lure that is classified as an imitation. It is therefore important to use it under the right conditions to be as effective as possible. The best time to use it is during the spawning season when white fish are moving in large numbers to reach their spawning grounds. Pike will be particularly attentive to these movements and will seize the opportunities that pass before them.

If you are lucky enough to observe these white fish on the move, try to imitate their swimming speed with your lure as much as possible. Too fast and the pike won't have time to react to the lure, too slow and they will follow the lure without ever catching it. You can also use the glide bait in winter fishing, when the big fish start to come up to the edges before the breeding season.
