Return of session / Opening of the trout, three generations of fishermen at the water's edge

As every year at this time of the year, last Saturday was the traditional opening of the trout fishing. At our place, it is an unavoidable appointment that we live in family, 3 generations united around the same passion.

An opening to the land of legends

This year again, it was an appointment in the land of legends for the opening of the trout. After an episode of drought, one week before the opening, big uninterrupted rains poured down on the land of the Abers. The water levels are well up, some meadows are still full of water, but the fishing gods are with us.

On this opening Saturday, the weather calmed down for the day, and even if the color of the water was loaded, it was not raining anymore and the wind was moderate. After a difficult awakening for the youngest of the group and a copious breakfast at home, we embarked the material and took the road of the country of the abers, coast of the legends.

We picked up some big garden worms, so we don't have to use lead sinkers on our rigs. Two jokers on the line, it's the weight of the big worms that makes the line sink. We fish downstream and the line follows the current in a natural way. The first fish are difficult to find. You have to insist behind the submerged branches or in the bends of the meandering river, where the current slows down a little.

Then we arrive on the meadow of the horses, it is the kind of moment where fishing becomes accessory, this meeting with the inhabitants of the corner. In this case, three nice riding horses that were only looking for petting. Half an hour on the side... When you take the time to take your time, a trout trip is also that, to watch and enjoy nature.

The lunch break, an important moment on opening day

After this chivalrous episode, we go back to the car to change corner. We go up the river a little bit for a wilder place, towards the Chapelle de Loc Mazé. This will also be the place where we will have a snack break. This chapel is located on the spring part of the Aber Benoît. The chapel, neglected since 1928, fell into ruin. In 1979, a group of young people from the M.L.C of Plabennec, then the association "Buhez ha Plijadur e Lok-Maze" (Life and Joy in Loc-Maze) under the impulse of Fanch Jestin undertook its restoration. This small place out of time is ideal for the lunch break.

A successful opening

The river at this point has some clear spots and some very crowded areas. The trout on this part are not huge, 4 of them were spiked on this area, the biggest was at 25. They are only wild ones, with a beautiful colored dress and of course, released after the photo session. Along the banks, daffodils, primroses, and even wild hellebores, bring a nice touch of color.

As a part of the river is clear, I take the opportunity to give a lesson of fishing to my grandson. Since the beginning of the day, he had a shorter rod than ours and handling a 3 meters rod among brambles and branches, it is not innate. He will do pretty well.

After this very pleasant break, we take the car again to fish the same stream a little lower. At this place, it is a little wider and there are nice areas of rocks, it is there that we will also find some trout, always in the 25 to 26 cm. And always not easy to get out among the branches and the brambles on the banks. We disturbed several times couples of mallards in reproduction period, as well as some great blue herons.

Once again, we had a nice lesson in nature. About fifteen trout visited us, which is not bad considering the conditions. We were able, above all, to perpetuate this meeting of several generations with a common passion.
