Fishing for cuttlefish from the shore, the essential equipment to be efficient

Present on all the French coasts, cuttlefish is very interesting to fish. To be as efficient as possible, you have to adapt your equipment: rod, reel, braid, leaders and jigs.

The rod and reel set

Fishing for cuttlefish from the shore requires specific equipment. When practicing the technique from a seawall or a beach, increasing the casting distances allows to have more chances of success.

To do this, you must use a long rod, ideally between 2m40 and 2m70. This last one must be able to throw jigs of size 2.0 to 3.5 see 4.0 for the biggest cuttlefishes.

The reel must be light enough to have a good comfort and to carry out the animations of the jig without constraint. A size between 2000 and 3000 allows to have a good ratio capacity/weight, as well as a sufficient ratio to bring back quickly. Make sure that the center of gravity of the set is as close as possible to the reel to maximize comfort.

The braid and the bottom line

Cuttlefish is not a great fighter, except for very large individuals which are quite rare. This allows us to reduce the diameter of the braid and the line to increase the casting distances. A very fine braid will also allow a better feeling of the touches and will split better the water to limit the effect of banner.

When looking for small and medium-sized individuals, we can lower the diameter of our braid below 10 hundredths without any problem. An even thinner braid, less than 7 hundredths, can save up to 15 meters when casting compared to a 10 hundredths diameter braid.

Of course, the leader should be adjusted accordingly, to avoid messy or brittle knots. I recommend a minimum of 16 hundredths fluorocarbon, and a maximum of 24 hundredths. Fluorocarbon has a tendency to sink, unlike nylon, so you can sink the braid to prevent it from floating on the surface.

Adapted jigs

Choosing a jig for cuttlefish fishing depends mainly on the size of the individual you want to target. Know that even a cuttlefish of 10 cm will not hesitate to attack a jig much larger than it. On the other hand, it will have more difficulty to be pricked allowing us not to lose time on small cuttlefish, sometimes present in very large numbers.

The most effective sizes are between 2.0 and 4.0. You can then vary the speed of descent, faster if you want to make contact with the bottom in a deep area, slower to stay as long as possible in the water layer.

Making contact with the bottom quickly allows you to find buried cuttlefish quickly, while a gliding jig will attract cuttlefish from further away. Don't forget to check the sharpness of your baskets regularly, a contact with rocks may twist them or dull them quickly.
