Return of session / Kayak fishing, the importance of adapting to weather conditions

Knowing how to adapt your fishing © Paul Duval

When fishing in a kayak, one must know how to adapt. During a session, the weather can change very quickly. It is therefore necessary to plan your route, to take the necessary clothing and to know how to change techniques.

Check the weather conditions beforehand

Never leave without checking the weather

We can never repeat it enough, a good reading of the weather forecast is essential when preparing an outing. In Brittany, the weather can go through several seasons in a few hours. It is important to consult reliable websites before going kayak fishing, first to know if the chosen spot will be practicable and then to adapt your clothing to the situation .

This established, and dressed accordingly, you can then make your session in good conditions. Fish often like these weather changes, and in this month of October, the changes of seasons on the same morning are frequent.

On this morning of October 10th, the weather was calm at the beginning of the morning, the wind only rising around 10 o'clock. With a North-East orientation which left me a large part of the chosen spot relatively sheltered.

As soon as the fishes are put in the water, the sky is grey, the light is diffuse, I choose a green color bright enough to make a difference. Bars, mackerels and garfish are hunting and this small 3DB SHAD in 70 mm does not leave them indifferent. The wind being felt a little more brought our famous Breton drizzle.

Change of fishing technique

I decide to fish under the shelter of the docks, the first 300 meters are relatively calm. In order to change my technique, and the cephalopods being present during the last trips, I take out my rig Tataki . Here again it doesn't take long, I use the wind drift to rake a large area. I let myself be carried about 50 meters and when it becomes too fast, I move up the daggerboard to get back to the shelter of the dock and so on.

New technique, new holds

I will fish like that for a good hour, catching nice cuttlefish and big squid which are really present now.

Also enjoy fishing on foot

Around 11:00 am, the wind is getting stronger but the sky is clearing, I take advantage of it to get closer to my fishing spots. The water is still a little high, I take out the lures of surface while waiting, well takes me. I will make four nice bass just meshed and two of unhooked in the kayak.

The sky is getting clearer and clearer and my crabbing spots are being discovered, so I put the kayak on the foreshore for a one and a half hour fishing session. The big sleepers are there, as well as some shells that will make me happy this evening at home.

Shelter from the wind

To return, I will take advantage of the shelter of the long hull of a grain carrier who came to load, everything is usable to shelter from the wind. Then when I have to change tack to disembark at the hold, the wind and the waves will be from the front, which is easier to control with my pedal kayak. The most important thing on this type of session is the wind direction according to the chosen spot, always look for sheltered banks, especially if, like that day, I had gusts at 50 km/h.

Adapt your outfit to all the weather conditions you will encounter, rain, wind, sun. You have to be able to change it quickly on the water, and especially the spray will soak you to the skin if you don't have the right outfit.
