Fishing with bread at sea, an effective bait for many fishes

If there's one bait that's easy to obtain and oh so economical, it's bread. Fishing with bread at sea gives good results as long as you target the fish species likely to bite on bread.

What kind of bread should I use for sea fishing?

Baguettes may seem the obvious choice for bread fishing, but they're not always the best solution. To fish effectively with bread, you need a good hold on the hook, which is why it's sometimes preferable to choose types of bread that provide a denser, firmer crumb. However, all types of bread can be used, and it is even possible to add various attractants (sardine oil, amino acids, etc.).

There are also special fishing loaves on the market, designed specifically to hold hooks better.

Bread is a bait that mainly interests omnivorous and vegetarian fish. Mullet and sauper are the two fish species most interested in bread. Other species, such as sparids, particularly oblades and sars, are sometimes fond of bread.

The list of species that can be caught with bread is not closed, however, as many other opportunistic fish may at some point feed on bread. For example, it's not uncommon to hook a wolfish or even a bream when fishing with bread in the vicinity of ports. Indeed, the proximity of harbours, or even within harbour areas, allows the various species of fish present to become accustomed to feeding on bread that is frequently thrown overboard, especially during the summer months.

How to fish with bread?

When you decide to fish with bread at sea, it's important to think about baiting. Baiting helps bring the fish to the spot and provoke a feeding frenzy between species. Breadfishing can be practised with a jigger, a spinning jig or even a wedge.

Bread fishing takes place mainly when the waters are warm and the sea calm. You'll need to be discreet and subtle in your movements and, above all, in your rigs. Bread can be baited on single hooks of various sizes, depending on the bite and the target species. Triple hooks can be used to offer larger pieces of bread, or simply for a better hold on the hook when casting harder. It is sometimes necessary to knead the bread crumb for a long time, depending on its density and cooking, so that it holds properly on the hook.

You can fish for bread at sea either from the shore or from a boat. If you're fishing from the shore, choose harbours, beach approaches and dykes where there's a lot of human traffic.

Fish are accustomed to feeding on bread in these areas, especially in summer. The same is true when fishing from a boat, as heavily frequented anchorages concentrate mullet, sauper and oblades in search of food.
