Very well known by holiday makers, the Landes coast is a real paradise for multipurpose fishermen. You can fish in the lake or river as well as in the sea.

Lakes and ponds

They all have identical characteristics, as they were all formed at the same time. Sandy or muddy bottom without relief, deeper in the West than in the East, stable banks in sandy beaches in the West, marshy in the East and pine woods as a horizon.

The largest of all the lakes is the lake of Cazaux and Sanguinet which covers 5,800 hectares and reaches a depth of 24 meters. It is very interesting for fishing from the shore or by boat. There is a good density of roach, bream, rotengles, huge perch, pike, carp, tench and eel. A more than remarkable population of pike-perch and black-bass is developing more and more according to the local fishermen.

All these species can be found in all the water bodies of the region as the small pond of Biscarrosse of 92 hectares with a maximum depth of 2 meters. The banks are cluttered with rushes, it is the richest of all in black-bass.

The lake of Biscarrosse and Parentis reaches 3,600 hectares with a maximum depth of 20 meters. A large part of the western shore is forbidden to fishing in this lake. All the species, already mentioned, are well represented. The best fishing is done by boat.

The pond of Aurélhan covers 340 hectares with an average depth of 2 meters. Here again, the boat is essential, because the banks are really difficult to fish. The same species can be found there, in the same dense population, as in the previous lakes.

The pond of Léon has a surface area of about 350 hectares with an average depth of 2 meters. Here again, fishing by boat is preferable. The average size of the carnivorous fish, pikes, perches and pike-perches is impressive. Carp fishermen are also satisfied. The other species are well represented.

The pond of Soustons the lake is 390 hectares in size with an average depth of 1m80. We find the same type of environment and the whites are superbly represented, the roaches and the breams in particular.

The White Pond covers 200 hectares with an average depth of 4 meters. It is very good for its whites. It is the only pond where the black-bass is little represented.

Fishing in the rivers

They are all classified in first category private domain and all have the characteristics of the Landes rivers: sandy bottom, low depth, meanders, wooded banks, sometimes cluttered.

They are rich in herbarium, it is the case of the Onesse where the trout population is honest. There are also whites and eels and especially lampreys and loaches.

The Vignac contains the same species with the addition of pike in its downstream section.

La Palue is the most interesting river of all for its nice size trout.

Finally, the Magescq this is a safe bet for trout, sea lamprey and loche.

Fishing on the Landes coastline

Its reputation as a surfcasting paradise is not overrated. We fish with this technique all year round, especially for bass in spring and autumn. Flatfish, sole and plaice, as well as turbo are to be sought during the first three months of the year.

The meagre and the umbra are well represented as well as the rays and the sea bream. Sea bass fishing with buldo is a technique practiced on the rollers which come to rest on the slope of the beach and in the baïnes.

Fishing by boat from Capbreton allows to practice trolling, fishing to support or to the machine gun. Sea bass and speckled bass can be caught in rough seas, as well as in the oil seas further out. On the gulf of Capbreton in this famous false marine, bluefin tuna and bonito are present in spring and summer, and sometimes some marlin in autumn. Many species of sharks are present almost all year round.
