Hard lure fishing for sar on rocky shores, a technique that pays off

The rocky coasts, whether Mediterranean or Atlantic, are often full of common sars. It is a wary fish, difficult to catch, but which offers beautiful sensations once at the end of the line.

Biotopes to look for

Not all rocky coasts are the same, some are very steep and others very shallow. Fortunately for us, fishermen, the sar occupies all these areas in more or less large quantities. The sar is often fished by agitated sea, but the calm days are too neglected by the fishermen with the lure.

These fish are very territorial and do not hesitate to follow the lures to the shore. Shallow areas, from 50 cm to 4 meters, can be fished very well in bright sunshine and calm sea. If the sea is too rough, the lures tend to get carried away by the current and the waves, lose their swimming action and therefore do not interest the fish.

My favorite areas are long rocky plateaus, lined with large boulders or small islands, which the sars use for feeding and shelter.

Floating or sinking fish

Each type of swimming fish has its own advantages. The floating lures are generally used when the funds are weak and the risk of hooking is great. On the other hand, sinking lures allow you to reach areas further from the shore, without increasing the size of the lure you offer to the fish.

Short bib lures are often the most effective, allowing you to avoid scraping the bottom when not needed. Long bibs often pick up a lot of algae and get stuck between rocks more easily.

The sar having a small mouth compared to its size, the lengths of the lures can vary according to the size of the specimens sought. A lure of 5 cm will be perfect to imitate a small fry and will allow a greater success of striking on modest fish. To target large fish, lures of 9 or 11 cm should be included in the box.

Discretion is the order of the day

The sar is a fish which has a very good sight and which is very timid. It has a tendency to flee very quickly to take refuge under a rock at the slightest presence of a predator. To increase our chances of catching it in calm weather, approaches to the spots must be done with caution. It is important not to approach the edge and not to make any sudden movements.

Once you've combed the edge with a few casts, if no fish have bitten or followed, you can then move closer to try to cast further. Don't forget to dress in colors close to the rocks of your spots to blend more easily into the landscape.
