The barracuda is a fish that can be caught throughout the year from the shore or by boat. To increase our chances of success, our equipment must be adapted to the season in which we want to look for it.

Choosing your cane

When looking for barracuda, the weight of the lures varies according to the season. However, a single set is enough to practice this fishery all year round. Whether it is from the coast or a boat, the objective is to have important casting distances. To do this, the choice of the rod should be based on its length and its power range. The ideal rod would be between 2m40 and 2m70 in length, capable of casting lures weighing from 14 to 42 grams.

The choice of the reel

To equip this type of rod, the size of the reel will have to be large enough to accept fights with beautiful fish. The braid capacity is also an important factor, the line must be strong enough to avoid breakage and it will take a lot of space in the reel. A reel of size 3 000 is a minimum acceptable, but, a size 4 000 or 4 500 will ensure you a greater safety. To fill this reel, a 30 lb braid in 8 strands is perfectly adapted. Depending on the brand, the 30 lb corresponds to about 18 hundredths.

Lures for the summer

During the summer season, the warm surface waters allow us to fish with lures that move in shallow water or even on the surface. Poppers and stickbaits are very effective lures for triggering violent barracuda attacks. The choice of colors should be made according to the forage fish present in the area. Generally speaking, natural colors tending toward blue or gray are the most versatile.

The perfect length of the lure to practice this fishery is 14 cm, the weight is sufficient to cast far enough. The lure should not be too big to avoid that small individuals are frightened by its presence.

Lures for the rest of the year

When the water is colder, the lures that work best are longbill minnow jerkbaits. These lures imitate perfectly a small barracuda or a garfish in distress.

Standard colors are blue, white and green. The average size to use is between 15 and 21 cm long. Each brand has different models with different swimming and vibration characteristics. A good barracuda tackle box must be diversified to be effective in all situations that can be encountered. The addition of long soft lures will also allow you to lure more easily educated fish such as those at the entrance of ports for example.
