Throughout the season, many flies can be used to catch a pike, but with these 3 tried-and-tested complementary streamers, you should soon be catching a few bites!

Fly fishing for pike

In recent years, fly fishing for pike has become increasingly popular. As there are as many flies on the market as there are fly tyers, it can be difficult to make the right choice. As with a lure, the choice of fly will depend on a number of factors, including :

  • the prey of the moment
  • color
  • water temperature
  • above all the fisherman's convictions

With these three complementary models, you can catch pike in a wide range of situations. Of course, to be fully effective, they must be adapted to the conditions.

Imitative roach-colored fly

When the water is clear, flies in natural colors often pay off. Pike's favorite prey, and the most common in our continental waters, is the roach. A simple, realistic imitation often hits the mark.

This fly can be rigged for volume and water flow to create vibrations and attract predators. Animations are generally linear, with a rolly-polly or stop-and-go action.

It can also be mounted lighter and flatter to "jerk" it and thus give it a jerkier swimming action on certain days more appreciated by pike.

You need different sizes of this fly depending on the season. I usually tie it in 18-20 cm, but a smaller model can be very useful at certain times of the year, especially in summer.

Mouche RH or Red head or Marlboro

This color is still in my boxes, as I've lost count of the number of pikes that have been caught with this model. Whether in clear or more tinted waters, the RH with its blood-red signal and white glitter body very often triggers pike to attack. An all-purpose fly that saves the day for many anglers.

Incentive fly

Flies in more "flashy" colors should be tried out during a fishing trip in both clear (and often cold) and murky water. FT or Fire-Tiger flies in pink/yellow or orange/greenish-chartreuse will catch pike for a long time to come. They are more visible from a distance and in low light thanks to their UV colors. They can trigger pike when other flies have not been effective.
