New generations of pedal-powered kayaks offer new possibilities for anglers who want to discover the open sea. For all ages and body types, kayaks have become the best alternative to boat fishing.

Fishing areas within pedal range

Nowadays, the pedal kayak allows you to go where no paddle kayak would have dared to go. The muscles necessary for the motorization use the most powerful of the human body: the legs! Indeed, no more need for a noisy engine to travel many kilometers, your legs are there for you.

Although some types of fishing in the Mediterranean require a boat to go several nautical miles away from the coast, the majority of fish are found closer than one might think. The seabed in the South East of France and Corsica has the particularity of becoming very deep very quickly. In any season, the fish of your dreams can be found between 0 and 100 meters deep. It usually takes less than an hour of pedal kayaking to reach these deep areas. Of course, this time can be put to good use by letting a trolling rod work by itself behind you.

A stable and secure boat

The choice of your kayak should be in accordance with your sense of balance and your weight. Streamlined kayaks designed for speed will not be your ideal if you do not feel comfortable on the water. Don't be afraid to select a kayak that is wide rather than long, which will allow you to feel safe while navigating and fighting with a fish.

The safety equipment is obviously an absolute must, safety is a priority. It is of course recommended to go out with several people, so you can go fishing with your friends for two good reasons: pleasure and safety.

The non-negligible advantages of kayaking for fishing

In vertical fishing, drift control is the most important factor in ensuring success. The pedals allow you to keep your hands free while fishing and therefore stay in continuous motion, facing the drift, to stay in the best spot at all times.

If you decide to go after big fish, the light weight of the kayak will make it easier for you to tire out your opponent, who will be forced to drag you like a cork! When fighting fish weighing more than 20 kg, you will still need to be secured by a partner when you hoist the fish onto the kayak. The stability of a kayak remains precarious when you add more than 20 kg on one side.

The average speed of navigation in a pedal kayak is about 4 knots or 7.4 km/h. You just have to do some calculations to estimate the time it will take you to reach your spots!
