Carnivore fishing: how can we develop confidence in our lures?

We all have our favourite lures, the ones that bring us the most catches and in which we have the most confidence. Relativity aside, there are undoubtedly some lures that are better or worse than the others, but they're all capable of catching fish, but we still have to trust them.

It's not easy for a new lure to find its place in your tackle box. In fact, the hardest thing for a new lure is to quickly prove its worth, so that it doesn't remain at the bottom of your tackle bag. We all have our favourite lures, and they're all different. Which just goes to show that they all work! But how can we develop the confidence we have in them so that we can use them more often and add another string to our bow?

Our boxes are full of lures, some of which never see the water...

Miracle lures?

It's obvious that some of our lures catch more fish than others, for a variety of reasons:

  • They're used much more often, so it's mathematical and logical that, in time, they'll be the source of more catches. The more fish they catch, the more we use them, and the more we use them, the more fish they catch... A real vicious circle!
  • These are always the first ones you tie on your line when you start a session... Obviously, if there's a fish to be caught, it'll be with this lure once again!
  • We see it as our lifesaver, so when the fishing is tough, we take it out of the box and end up catching a predator, which once again reinforces its status as a "miracle lure".
  • Last but not least, THIS lure, without our being aware of it, perfectly matches our fishing: the biotopes, the techniques used and the most common fishing conditions during our outings.

Give the product a chance

From the above observation, the right strategy for developing confidence in our lures is to give each of them a fair chance. This means using them under the same conditions, in the same time and with the same hierarchy, to really compare them and judge their effectiveness.

But that's not all...

Understanding them

There's no such thing as a miracle lure, and there's intrinsically no such thing as a bad lure either! A good lure is simply one that is used in the right way in the right context. So you need to analyze and understand your lure to know how to animate it and what type of spot it's best suited to. In the same way, weather and seasonal conditions must be taken into account to determine the relevance of your lure or certain of its characteristics at any given moment.

Encouraging peaks in activity

The most common mistake made by anglers is to try all their lures when fishing is difficult... The conclusion is that most of their lures are very bad! Above all, it's a bad strategy!

It's especially when the fish are very active that you need to review your box. It's by catching fish that we better understand the subtleties of each of our lures and develop our confidence in them.

Use them first

As we've said, if there's an active fish to be caught on a spot, it's highly likely (provided the lure is somewhat suitable) that it will be caught with the first lure used. Subsequent baits will then fail because the area will already be saturated or "all" caught. So if you want to test your lures, it's essential to use them first and keep the ones you know and trust for later!
