A fish capable of alternating life in freshwater and in the sea
Born in a river, the Atlantic salmon spends most of its life at sea, then, after several years, returns to the river where it was born to spawn. It is precisely at this time that fly fishermen will be able to meet them.

Where to fish?
The rivers hosting salmon runs are all listed on the website of the Quebec Federation for Atlantic Salmon. The most popular ones are located in the Gaspé and North Shore regions for their easy access.

When to go?
The beginning of the run is the most coveted time because the salmon are in great shape and easier to catch. But, it is also the most uncertain moment because from one year to another the fish do not arrive at the same date. Depending on the river, the first salmon will arrive around mid-June to mid-July. At this time, the salmon that arrive from the sea have a silver color.

During the month of August, fishing has the reputation of being complicated because of the low water levels and the heat. Nevertheless, it is important to know that throughout the summer new salmon arrive and there is always something to play for.

In September, fishing becomes more interesting again with the drop in temperature and especially with the males that become more aggressive as they approach spawning. The end of the season can be the right choice considering the decrease of the frequentation of the river banks. Indeed, the wave of fishermen of the opening having passed, the pressure of fishing will be less important. At this time of the year, the fish will be higher on the river and will have taken their fall colors.

Finally, the fishing season ends at the end of September to let the last salmon return to their breeding grounds and spawn in peace. The Atlantic salmon is an atypical river fish. Its behavior is therefore all the more interesting to discover and understand.
