Point of view / The YouTube Predator Cup, a lure-fishing competition with an original concept

The 2020 season of the YouTube Predator Cup is coming to an end with the broadcast of the final on December 20 and 25. For the first time the episodes are offered with French subtitles, so it's time to discover or rediscover this new concept.

The YouTube Predator Cup, as its name suggests, is a lure-fishing competition broadcast in several episodes on the YouTube platform. For the pleasure of francophones, the 2020 season, which is the 3rd of this competition, has its version subtitled in French and it is available on the youtube channel "FISHTIQUE". This year's final pits Marc Ptacovsky against Enrico Di Ventura. In view of the scores that the latter obtained in the previous matches, this final promises a nice duel.

An original competition concept

The competition takes place in the Netherlands, where 24 participants from several European countries, including Germany, France, Sweden and Switzerland, will compete. Through the diverse origins of the competitors, it is also their technique, the animations and the material used that make this program interesting.

The competition is divided into 4 phases. A first qualification phase which allows to keep 8 of the 24 competitors in order to attack later the quarter finals. The quarter-finals are made up of 4 duels, the semi-final of 2 duels to finally finish on the final duel.

The qualification phases are what I find the most interesting because the spots visited by the competitors are more varied and the strategic aspect makes sense. Indeed, thanks to the relevant regulations, the participants have to be strategic (in addition to their fishing skills) to hope to reach the next stage of the adventure.

A very interesting and fair settlement

As mentioned earlier, one of the points that got me hooked on the concept is the regulations that allow for different strategies. The principle is to look for the 3 target species, namely pike, pikeperch and perch. The angler must accumulate the longest length on 6 fish, with 3 imposed fish that correspond to the target fish and 3 fish to choose from among the 3 species taken into account. Each of these species has a different coefficient to put them at the same level. For example, a 40 cm perch or a 62 cm pike-perch is equivalent to an 80 cm pike. This is explained in detail in episode 1. This first episode can be confusing to get a good grip on the concept because of a dubbing that lacks conviction but the following episodes have simply been subtitled and accompanied by audio comments in French which I find more enjoyable.

Some episodes may seem long compared to the content but there are always some nice actions and beautiful fish to see. It's a nice series to watch during these winter holidays or during the closing coming up.
