The Jig Ragot Herring, my favorite for sea jig fishing

The Jig Herring, distributed by Ragot, is the model I use exclusively on my sea fishing trips. Let's find out why I chose this model and how I use it, whether I'm fishing vertically or casting and reeling in.

Simplicity and efficiency

I'm particularly fond of jig fishing as it allows me to catch a wide variety of fish species. Simple to use, it often unlocks complicated situations when fish shun plastic lures. Its ease of use also means that I can easily introduce novices to jig fishing, and I'm almost certain that they'll hit the mark.

I tested a number of models, some of which were in the region of 30 euros for 150-gram models. Suffice to say that at this price, the output can be expensive in case of repeated breakage. In the end, I settled on the herring model from ragot. Available in 25, 35, 50, 75, 100, 150, 250 and 350 grams and in 11 colors, it can be adapted to all fishing situations, whether deep vertical fishing beyond 100 meters or casting back on shore hunts.

A special shape

This jig has a wide, slightly undulating profile which gives it an off-axis swimming action when reeled in linearly.

This shape makes it ideal for vertical fishing using the elevator technique.

A little trick I use regularly to accentuate this erratic swimming action: you can twist the jig slightly to accentuate the ripple as shown in the photo below.

The bottom jig has been slightly bent.

2 main animations

  • Visit vertical i use the "elevator" technique, which consists of moving the jig upwards through the water layer in a linear fashion, simulating the escape of prey. I use this animation when I'm looking for deep fish, beyond 50 m, such as on wrecks.
Joli lieu jaune qui a succombé au jig hareng rose en 250 grammes.
Pretty pollack that succumbed to the pink herring jig in 250 grams.
  • Visit throw - bring back when the fish is off the bottom and active in the water column. I let the jig drop slightly and then animate it with small jerks or linear movements in the zone of activity.

An attractive price

With a price of less than 10 euros for the 150-gram model, this jig offers excellent value for money compared with the competition.

Original hooks to be reviewed

This jig can't be perfect, and its only negative point concerns the original hooks. The bite is not extraordinary and they rust quickly. As a precaution, I use other treble hooks such as Owner ST 66 or assists hooks.

Les hameçons d'origine ne sont pas le point fort de ce jig.
Original hooks are not this jig's strong point.

To sum up

  • Wide choice of weights and colors.
  • Excellent value for money.
  • Proven effectiveness.
  • Original hooks to be changed as a precaution.
