French Guiana, many species of fish to catch in the jungle

Although the aïmara is the master of the Sinnamary, French Guiana is home to many other rivers and fish species. For example, when fishing with bait or lures, you can catch piranha, acoupa or catfish.

With its many rivers and marshes, Guyana's fishing potential is enormous. While the Sinnamray River is undoubtedly the best place to go for Hoplias Aimara, your stay can also be an opportunity to discover other biotopes, species and fishing techniques.

L'acoupa

Present on the lower Sinnamry, Kourou, Iracoubo and in the barrage de petits sauts, this silvery fish with its blue highlights and wide mouth can exceed 5 kg. This fish is highly prized for its flesh and has the particularity of growling once out of the water. For sea anglers, it will remind you strangely of the meagre.

Fish with natural bait or soft lures, keeping close to the bottom.

The black piranha

A legendary species, the black piranha is the largest of its family, reaching 50 cm and 3 kg. With its round, flattened shape, this fish lives in schools and can be found in areas with currents as well as in slower, deeper areas. Its famous teeth are particularly impressive and sharp. You have to be very careful when unhooking it or you risk a nasty wound.

They can be fished with natural baits, but also with lures. They are particularly responsive to high-vibration lures such as spinners or lipless.

Although not found in Sinnamary, you can fish for it in French Guiana on the Maroni, Iracoubo and Counamama rivers.

The koumarou

The koumarou, also known as the pacou, with its piranha-like appearance, does not have the same teeth and diet. The Koumarou feeds mainly on fruit.

Reaching up to 5 kg, the koumarou offers a powerful fight, leaning with its broad body on the current veins. It is found in French Guiana on the Sinnamry and Haut-Maroni rivers.

It is fished almost exclusively with bait, including seeds, flowers or pellets made by local fishermen.

The trick is to spot the fish and present the bait on the surface as if it had just fallen into the water or to drift it into the right water vein.

The tiger surubi

Also known as the tiger torch in French Guiana, the tiger surubi is a catfish that can reach 15 to 20 kg and can be found in most of French Guiana's rivers. It's not the only member of the catfish family, but it's undoubtedly the most beautiful.

Its feeding activity, close to the bottom, is mainly concentrated at the ends of the day and at night. In fact, its barbels, which carry sensory receptors, enable it to locate itself in its environment, as well as to "taste" its food. Darkness is therefore not an obstacle to its feeding, quite the contrary.

A powerful fish, it requires the same equipment as the aimara, but is mainly fished with bait (live or pieces of fish), especially in areas well oxygenated by the current.

While French Guiana is particularly interesting for its jungle fishing and the discovery of its flora and fauna, its fishing interest is not limited to the jungle. The Caribbean Sea off the coast of this French overseas department gives you the chance to track down jacks, barracudas, kingfish and, above all, very large tarpon!
