Perfect Loop, the knot to make a perfect loop for fly or lure fishing

To give their streamers maximum freedom, fly fishers use the Perfect Loop. This is a knot forming a loop on which the streamer can slide freely. For swimming fish and stickbaits, it is also an interesting alternative.

When fishing for swim-fish, it's important to tie a looped knot to give your lure maximum freedom and not restrict its swimming action. In the same spirit, fly fishers use the Perfect Loop to tie a streamer on their line.

For greater visibility, I've made this tutorial with 40/100 fluorescent thread.

Here's how to do it:

Step 1

Pass your line through the eye of your hook, lure or streamer.

Step 2

Form a loop, with the main strand upstream of the hook eye.

Step 3

Pass the free strand behind the loop to create a second loop. This will trap your hook.

Step 4

Finish your turn and pass the free strand between the two loops. Then hold it between your fingers.

Step 5

Take your hook and pass it, and the loop that holds it in place, through the first loop formed.

Step 6

Moisten the knot with saliva and tighten gradually. You can adjust the width of your loop by pulling on the main strand before the knot is finally tightened.

All that's left to do is trim off the excess and your knot is complete.

Benefits

  • Solid.
  • Allows great freedom with lures, streamers or hooks.
  • Quick and easy to make, once mastered.

Disadvantage

  • For lures, the first loop must be large, so adjust the loop size before tightening.
