Are there any bad fishing lures?

Every year, the lure market sees the appearance of new models and colors. Everyone has their own preferences and tries out a few new models each season, sometimes concluding that some are very bad lures. But is this really true?

Use more than the lure itself

Has it ever happened to you that your favourite lure is also the one that your partner hates, or that the one that has no teeth in your box is the source of numerous catches for your friends?

We're all familiar with this situation, and we can all name the lures with which we have the most success... Beyond the fact that they must spend far more time on the end of our line than the others, there are undoubtedly other explanations as to why one lure is bad for us and excellent for another! It's probably not a question of the lure's intrinsic qualities, but rather of how it's used...

When nothing bites

The first reason why some lures have rarely seen the water and are sleeping peacefully at the bottom of our boxes is that we gave them a chance when all else failed... Obviously it's a bad day for fishing, we can't find the fish or they're totally inactive, and we're trying new things in these conditions. The conclusions are clear: this is a really bad lure! Perhaps we should start our outings with these new products?

Simply not suitable

We also sometimes conclude that a lure is ineffective because we simply didn't use it under the right conditions. It's quite possible that it doesn't match the prey of the moment, that it's not adapted to the environment (too heavy and big in 50 cm of water or a minnow in 40 m of water), to the time of day or the season (a topwater in the middle of January...) or even to the weather, as if we were using a very light surface lure in a big swell.

It's always important to understand the characteristics of a lure and how it can be used to get the best out of it!

Incorrect use or assembly

Sometimes we have no success with one lure while catching fish at the same time with another, simply because we've rigged it wrong or because we're using it for the wrong purpose. For example, we've chosen a jerkbait, but we don't know how to animate it, or we can't make pops with the popper we've just bought... Is it the lure or the person using it that's the worst?

Poor presentation

Finally, it's quite possible that the lure we're using is suited to the place and time and that we know how to animate it, but we simply make a mistake in presentation: depth, casting angle...

While it's undoubtedly true that some lures are more effective than others, I don't think there are any really bad ones. So, give every new lure in your box a chance by trying them out several times, under different conditions and in different ways. Maybe you'll discover the secret of some of them, and then they'll offer you some nice surprises.
