Life Jackets Are Mandatory: Aveyron Reminds Residents of the Rules

With the arrival of fall, the safety of boaters becomes a priority. In the Aveyron department, wearing a life jacket is mandatory from October 1 through April 30 on the department?s lakes. This specific regulation applies to all people on board and is intended to prevent risks associated with cold water.

In the Aveyron, high-visibility vests are required for seven months

As of October 1, anglers on the lakes of the Aveyron must wear personal flotation devices that fit their body type. This requirement remains in effect until April 30, in accordance with the provisions of the boating regulations established by the prefectural authorities.

The Aveyron Fishing Federation reminds everyone of these regulations, which apply not only to anglers on boats but also to others engaged in water sports.

For children under 16, life jackets must be worn year-round. Outside the winter season, adults must provide at least one appropriate flotation device for each person on board, subject to any stricter local requirements regarding the use of life jackets.

Regulations that vary by department

Please note that this seasonal requirement does not apply throughout all of France. The Transportation Code allows prefectural authorities to require the wearing of life jackets under certain circumstances or in specific areas.

Every angler should therefore familiarize themselves with the rules that apply to the body of water or river they frequent.

In the Aveyron department, some regulations are even stricter. In certain areas of the Lot department, for example, wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device is mandatory on all boats, regardless of the season.

Why wear a life jacket in the winter?

Fall and winter pose additional risks for fishermen on board. Water temperatures drop sharply, and an accidental fall can quickly become life-threatening.

The shock caused by a sudden plunge into cold water can lead to breathing difficulties, loss of mobility, and, eventually, hypothermia.

A properly fitted life jacket helps maintain the buoyancy needed while waiting for help or returning to your boat. Anglers who fish with lures, use vertical jigging techniques, or fish from a small boat are particularly at risk.

Essential gear all year round

Today, manufacturers offer automatic inflatable life jackets that are particularly well-suited for fishing. Lightweight and compact, they allow you to cast, fight a fish, or move around on board without significantly restricting your movements.

But beyond the regulations, it?s still a good habit to always wear your protective gear, even when it?s not required.

When it comes to safety, the best life jacket is the one you actually wear!
