The Rod and Reel
For shore fishing, a rod measuring 2.40 m to 2.70 m with a casting weight of around 10?40 g is the best place to start, as it allows you to cast far and handle a variety of lures. If you fish mostly from a boat or a dock, a slightly shorter rod may also work, but the most versatile option is still a shore-fishing spinning rod.
When it comes to reels, a size 2500 is often enough to get started, while a 3000 provides more line capacity when fishing at sea.
The Minimum Line
Braided line is generally the most practical choice for saltwater fishing because it improves sensitivity and casting distance. A thin diameter, around 10 to 15 hundredths, already covers many basic uses. You should then add a fluorocarbon leader for stealth and abrasion resistance, especially near rocks, docks, or mixed-terrain areas.
Lures to Bring
There?s no need to bring a huge tackle box: three types of lures are enough to get started. Bring a soft plastic lure like a shad, a versatile plug, and a metal lure such as a spoon or a jig. Along the coast, these lures cover a wide range of situations, from sea bass to mackerel, pollock, and other coastal fish.
Essential Accessories
The bare essentials also include a pair of long-nose pliers for removing hooks, a line cutter, and a small storage box. A landing net is very useful if you?re fishing alone or from a dock, as it ensures you can land the fish safely and minimizes the risk of losing them. Polarized sunglasses aren?t essential, but they significantly improve comfort and make it easier to read the water.
The Recommended Basic Kit
In short, a very simple starter kit can consist of just:

- 1 shad, 1 minnow, 1 surface lure, 1 jig, or 1 spoon
