The GIFAP opposes the limit of 5 mackerel per fisherman!

GIFAP (Groupement des Industriels et Fabricants d'Articles de Pêche) is strongly opposed to the French Ministry of the Sea's decision to limit recreational fishing catches to five mackerel per fisherman per day in 2026.

  1. Lack of consultation

The GIFAP denounces a unilateral decision by the Ministry, announced without any formal consultation of economic players. According to the GIFAP, previous discussions with the administration had referred to a ceiling of 15 fish per day, not 5. They believe that this breakdown in dialogue undermines confidence between the State and the industry.

  1. Major economic risk

Recreational fishing is worth nearly 3 billion euros to the French economy, including around 30 million euros directly linked to mackerel fishing. Reducing the quota could therefore lead to :

  • a drop in activity for retailers and manufacturers in the sector,
  • discouragement among recreational anglers,
  • and job losses in coastal areas.
  1. Measure deemed disproportionate

GIFAP points out that there are no scientific studies demonstrating that limiting mackerel to 5 would have a measurable effect on the state of stocks. It considers that recreational fishing should not be used as an "adjustment variable" in the face of international imbalances that mainly concern professional fishing.

  1. Societal and educational issues

Mackerel fishing is presented as a popular, educational and accessible activity, enabling the transmission of maritime know-how. GIFAP sees it as an environmental education tool to be preserved.

  1. Too many constraints

The press release criticizes a recent accumulation of regulations: RecFishing application, lead-related bans, restrictions in marine protected areas, etc. The organization warns of a climate of regulatory instability harmful to coastal businesses.

In conclusion, gIFAP requests :

  • the immediate suspension of the quota of five mackerel,
  • and the opening of a dialogue with the industry to establish proportionate, scientifically sound and economically viable regulation.
