7 good reasons to go fishing less often in 2026

There are always good reasons, sometimes far-fetched, to go to the water's edge to indulge your passion. But it's also possible to find many excuses to avoid these moments of happiness. Indeed, superstitions are long-lived and sometimes put anglers to the test. If you're lacking inspiration for staying warm this year, here's how to justify it!

"Good fishing

That famous "Good fishing" tossed your way by relatives or other teasing anglers can ruin the concentration of some overly superstitious anglers. The most religious are even capable of turning around and going home!

The banana

In France this superstition is not very widespread, but in northern countries it has the same value as the previous words!

Crossing a black cat or going under a ladder

Less specific but just as serious for the superstitious, we could extend our thoughts to the black cat, Friday the 13th or even going under a ladder. I invite you to reinforce some people's beliefs, so you'll be sure to find fewer anglers on your spots!

North wind

"North wind, nothing bites". Surely, if you respect all sayings, it's best to stay warm. And yet, in the middle of winter, even with a northerly wind, it's still possible to make a few catches, especially in sheltered, sunny areas, and even more so if the weather has been stable for a few days. Similarly, at sea, in North Finistère or Côtes d'Armor, the northerly wind brings swell, and at certain times this favors bass activity along the edges.

Take out the landing net before the first catch

Some anglers never venture to commit this act, which they believe can ruin a fishing trip... I'm more inclined to think that not being totally ready can cause you to miss your first catch and maybe even a record fish. If this is added to a hit on the first cast, you can be sure that there's no point in continuing fishing!

The bad moon

The moon has a major influence on the tides and therefore on sea fishing, but it also has repercussions in freshwater and on fish activity in general. Even if it's difficult to describe precisely and exhaustively its influence on the quality of your outings, what's certain is that we often go out when we have the chance, so it would be foolish to stay in the heat because of a single factor, since the parameters affecting your outings are so numerous and sometimes unpredictable.

Why so many beliefs?

The main reason why many people are superstitious is to provide a justification or excuse for things that have happened. This allows them (for them!) to rationalize the results of an outing and, above all, it reassures them by providing an excellent excuse if they come up empty-handed. "It's not my fault, it's the moon! Just like not having the right lure or the fish not biting!
