Trolling for squid: explanations and tips for success

Trolling for squid involves moving jigs behind the boat at slow speed, in the upper water layers where squid come up to hunt, especially at night in winter.

Principle and periods

This technique is widely used in the Mediterranean and in coastal trawling, as it allows you to locate schools quickly over large areas. It gives excellent results day and night, but peak activity often occurs at dusk and at night, when squid come up to hunt near the coast or in lighted areas (harbours, beaches, dykes).âeurosâeuros

Speed, distance and depth

We generally use a slow drag, around 1 to 3 knots, which greatly increases the number of bites, although some fish faster (up to 5âeuros7 nÅuds) depending on the lures and conditions encountered. Lines are drawn between 10 and 50 m behind the boat, and lures work mainly between 3 and 10 m depth, often 5âeuros6 m above the bottom. Edges and rocky areas are priority prospecting areas.âeurosâeuros

Equipment and fixtures

To find squid by trolling, we generally use a moderately powerful boat or casting rod (around 12âeuros20 lb) with a reel size 3000âeuros4000 fitted with nylon around 30/100, possibly stronger up to 40/100 depending on the terrain. The 25/100 fluorocarbon leader ends with a jig, often leaded (30âeuros60 g) and sometimes preceded by one or two additional small jigs. The various jigs should be mounted on clips for quick size and color changes.âeuros

Colors, sectors and animation

Bib jigs are chosen according to the light and color of the water: natural shades in clear water, brighter or phosphorescent colors in dark water or at night.

The best areas to prospect are drop-offs, rock heads and harbor entrances. These are areas where squid must pass through, preferring medium depths with a little hold.

The boat provides the entertainment: we simply keep an eye on the bites (weight changes, pulls) and reel in without à âeuroscoups to avoid unhooking, as the squid are held only by the hook baskets.
