A variety of whitefish are found in freshwater. To catch whitefish, a wide variety of techniques are used, often adapted to the specific species, environment and season.

White fish?

In freshwater fishing, white fish are a group of fish characterized mainly by their lean, white flesh and their rather omnivorous or herbivorous feeding habits. The term does not refer to their external color, but rather to the nature of their flesh, which distinguishes them from carnivorous fish or salmonids.

Definition and classification

The term "white fish" essentially covers freshwater species, often belonging to the Cyprinidae family.

These fish generally have slender, elongated bodies, a single dorsal fin, and lean flesh prized in food.

They live in most of Europe's rivers, lakes and ponds, and are an important source of sport fish.

Some common examples of freshwater whitefish

  • Common carp (Cyprinus carpio): omnivorous, white meat, highly prized for sport and culinary fishing.
  • Ablette (Alburnus alburnus): small silvery fish often forming large shoals in calm waters.
  • Roach (Rutilus rutilus): common in freshwater, omnivorous bottom feeder.
  • Tench (Tinca tinca): stocky fish, often found in slow waters, varied diet.

Classic techniques for searching for white fish

Spearfishing

Traditional technique using light line, float and regular baiting. Ideal for targeting roach, bream, bleak, carp or tench in still waters, ponds and rivers. Common baits include worms, maggots, seeds (corn, hemp seeds), pasta and bread.

English-style fishing

Feeder fishing

Use of a small cage fitted with a sinker to deposit groundbait on the bottom, attracting white fish close to the hook. The feeder technique provides effective bottom fishing for bream, carp, tench and bleak. Regular baiting is often the key to success, especially for wary species such as bream and roach.

The various whitefish fishing techniques offer a wide variety of approaches for both beginners and more experienced anglers.
