Different baits to use
Whether you're fishing from shore or from a boat, the choice of bait is crucial when targeting bream. Different types of bait can be used to increase your chances of catch.
Green crab: king bait for bream, it is highly selective and particularly effective on large specimens; large bream easily crush its shell.
American worm (or trawl worm) : highly appreciated for its fragrance and resistance, it holds large bream and remains attractive in rough water. Bibi, cordelle and arenicole worms are also widely used, especially for shore fishing and surfcasting.
Knife: a very attractive shellfish, it can be used fresh (ideally) or lightly cooked. They are ideal for selecting the best pieces and keeping them clearly visible on the bottom.
Bibi (Mediterranean marine worm) : star bait for sea bream in the Mediterranean, effective on rocky, sandy or muddy bottoms.
Piade, callianasse : this small crustacean is reputed to be irresistible, especially in the Mediterranean and at the beginning/end of the season.
Mussels and small shellfish : natural baits present in sea bream's daily diet; can be used in bunches or mixed with another bait.
Cuttlefish or squid : pieces are sometimes used alternately, especially on large subjects.
Others : sand worms, trawl worm sections, small pieces of fish or shrimp, depending on local availability and season.
A few practical tips
Bait should always be as fresh as possible and suited to the size of fish you're after.
The use of a discreet rig (slider, long leader) and a strong hook of lighter iron is important to fool the bream.
During the day, use parasite-resistant baits (crab, American worm). At night, you can use more fragile baits such as mussels or knives.
In short, rely on marine worms (bibi, American worm), crabs, knife and piade for successful sessions and selection of the most beautiful fish.
