Fishing in the Haute-Loire: two fishermen's memories in a scrapbook

Fishing stories

The book Pêcher en Haute-Loire (Fishing in the Haute-Loire) by Kizou Dumas and Marc Desage takes the reader along the river with rod in hand. From upstream to downstream, from one century to the next, the authors introduce us to the landscapes and charms of the Velay region, accompanied by lively anecdotes about fishing through the ages.

The authors

Marc Desage is a passionate and committed figure in the world of artificial fly fishing, rooted in a long personal history linked to nature and aquatic environments. Growing up in the countryside, he cultivated a love of water and fishing, which naturally led him to frequent the beautiful rivers of France, as well as those of many European countries. His approach is characterized by a deep-seated quest, always seeking to discover the "other side" of aquatic environments, beyond simple fishing techniques. His experience has been enriched by his travels, learning a variety of techniques and competing in both river and lake fishing competitions.

Alongside his passion for fishing, he has turned to writing, enabling him to share his world and his knowledge. In 2009, he published "L'Accroche-mouche", a joint work with Kizou Dumas, which blends art and fishing in a singular style. More recently, in 2023, he co-signed "L'Ordre des Choses", an illustrated novel combining adventure and fishing, immersing the reader in a world that is both unusual and rich in fishing-related emotions.

Christian Dumas, aka Kizou is a painter and engraver since 1982, and a passionate fly-fisherman as well. A native of the Haute-Loire, he frequents the waters of the Lignon, and shares his passion on trips to Quebec, Ireland and elsewhere.

In short, Marc Desage and Kizou Dumas form a duo combining passion, art, writing and commitment, each bringing their own sensibility to enrich the environmental culture of fly fishing through their artistic and literary creations.

Extract

"This is one of the most mysterious fishing sites I know. The river is difficult to access. To reach its banks, you first have to take the path that overlooks them below the bridge. Sometimes it approaches, sometimes it leaves. You think you've lost her, but you can still hear her lapping through the branches. So we keep going. Then, after a few hectometres of chaotic travel, what is now just a trail plunges deep into the gorge, through a ten-metre tunnel carved out of the rock.

They call this place "The Devil's Gates". Beyond this threshold, there's nothing but scrub and brambles. I've always wondered why, no doubt a long time ago, men, and perhaps women, worked so hard to carve out the cliff. Why did they use shovels and pickaxes to open up a passage that leads nowhere? Indeed, if you want to find the river, you'll have to wade through dead branches, brambles and rocks to finally, after much effort, reach the water's edge."
