The basics of fishing from a jetty
For a successful fishing trip on a jetty, several factors need to be considered. Jetties provide access to deeper waters where various species of fish are concentrated. Sea currents and tides have a considerable influence on the behavior of fish around these structures.
The best times to fish from a jetty are usually dawn and dusk, when fish are actively feeding. The tidal coefficient also plays a crucial role - a rising tide often brings new prey close to the jetty, attracting predators.
Here are the main species you can target from a pier, depending on the region:
- Sea bass, sea bream and mackerel on the Atlantic coast
- Sea bass, gilthead bream and seabream in Mediterranean waters
- Pollock and pout in La Manche
- Moray eels and barracudas in French overseas departments and territories
When it comes to equipment, opt for a versatile 3 to 4-metre rod with a medium-sized corrosion-resistant reel. For bait, marine worms such as arenicola work remarkably well, as do live shrimp and fresh fish pieces.

Advanced techniques to optimize your shots
The waddling technique is particularly productive on piers. It consists in vertically animating your line near the piers, where fish often gather. The jerky movement imitates wounded prey and triggers the predatory instincts of hunting fish.
Another effective approach is adapted surfcasting, which allows you to cast your line beyond the pier's direct zone of influence. This technique requires :
- Sufficiently heavy lead (80-150 g)
- A leader with several hooks (2 to 3)
- A powerful rod for long-distance casting
- Firm reel hold during retrieval

Don't forget to adapt your approach to the seasons. In winter, slow down your fishing and focus on bottom fishing. In summer, fish are more active and respond better to dynamic techniques such as drag casting.
Knowing the exact spots on your pier is a major asset. Observe regular anglers and spot areas where catches are frequent. Corners, cavities between boulders and shady areas are often havens for game fish.
